Watsonville, CA..June 16...Having run a strong second the previous
weekend when Brent Kaeding successfully blocked his last lap pass attempt,
Daniel Hood led the final 15 laps as he raced to a $1000 win in the 30 lap SCRA
injected wingless 360 sprint car feature Friday night at Ocean Speedway. It
marked his first ever feature win while driving his father Jamie's car.
Bakersfield long tow Rusty Carlile led the first 15 laps and ran a solid second
in the feature ahead of Santa Maria area long tow Jeff Fiscus and Craig Smith,
who had to battle from the rear. Carlile is locked in a duel with Jonathan Logan
and Richard Harvey Jr for the SCRA point title. Mark Cooper's tough season in
the super stock class sees him buried in fifth place in points, but he raced to
this week's $500 win to give him two main event wins in 2006. The win snapped a
three race winning streak for point leader Dennis Pelphrey, but Pelphrey ran a
solid $250 second ahead of point runnerup Phillip Priddy. After battling his way
from 8th starting to second in his heat race, defending Bay Area Dwarf Car
champion Todd Damron led every lap to win their feature race. It was a near
perfect night for Damron as he also collected the dash honors. Dave Mosier had a
big night as he won a heat race and then ran second in the feature ahead of Al
Ghiorso and Mark Tillinger. Damron was third in points going into the night, but
he moved around Howard Fergerson into second this night and will gain a lot of
ground on point leader Mark Chaves who finished 15th. American Stock point
leader Tim Clark Sr scored the $100 feature win for the fourth time in six races
and point runnerup George Fernandez was a $75 second. G Fernandez has stayed
within 32 points of Clark Sr, but will not run a complete season as he is headed
for North Carolina to attend a NASCAR tech school. Third ranked Steve Montgomery
was a $50 third and Clark's teammate Kenny Neville ran fourth. Four Banger point
leader Jeff Wilson had lost his car to a claim at the previous race, but
traveled up to Antioch to claim a car to keep his season going. In his new
mount, he raced to his first feature win of 2006 ahead of point runnerup Andrew
Camperud and Jimmy Cook. The big night of racing ended with a six car
destruction derby and Ryan Cheevers was the winner ahead of Alex Villereal,
James Matthews, Allen Duckworth, Matt Trebino and Michael Trebino.
Previous week feature
winner Kaeding was busy racing at the Dirt Cup in Washington, but the addition
of four wingless spec sprints grew the SCRA count to 14 cars this week. Logan
turned in quick time of 14.114, 1/3 of a second faster than last week's quick
time. Hood ranked second at 14.359 and Smith ran 14.526. They were the only cars
to break into the 14's as Harvey ran a 15.043 and Ventura regular Dennis
Rodriguez made the long tow north to rank fifth ahead of Carlile. Albert Pombo
was 7th ahead of the spec sprint of David Press. Smith won the opening heat race
ahead of the spec sprint of Aaron Sirles, Logan and Rodriguez. Harvey outraced
Carlile, Hood and Scott Merrell in heat 2. The dash determines the starting
order for the front three rows in the feature and Carlile won from the pole
ahead of smith, Hood and Harvey. It was a tough feature for point title hopefuls
Logan and Harvey. Contact from Pombo sent Logan into Harvey and both the Logan
and Harvey cars were damaged enough to end their race. Carlile led those first
15 rounds from the pole before Hood made his winning move. Smith had fallen to
the rear during the action, but was scrambling his way back. Carlile put a lot
of pressure on Hood but settled for second while Fiscus ran third. Smith made it
back to fourth ahead of Rodriquez, Sirles, Steve Mannina, Kevin Barnes, Press
and Merrell. Hood's good luck ended the next night in Chowchilla as he suffered
oil pump woes in hot laps and his night ended before time trials.
There were 9 super
stocks. Pelphrey won the heat race over Cooper. Bob McCoun wheeled the Chris
Kulvicki car in the heat action and ran third, but Kulvicki was back behind the
wheel for the feature. Doug Hagio won the dash in front of Cooper. After second
place runs in both the heat and dash, Cooper won a spirited duel with Pelphrey
in the main event. Priddy finished third ahead of Hagio, Ford faithful Tony
Oliveira, Kulvicki, Danny Scott and usual Ocean late model racer Mike Meazell.
Pelphrey's point lead is 31 over Priddy and 42 ahead of Oliveira. D Scott is now
5 points back of Oliveira and 4 ahead of Cooper.
The dwarf cars had a 24
car turnout with several Antioch regulars joining in. Duane Daniel made his
first Watsonville appearance of 2006 coming off a feature win at Antioch the
previous weekend. Mosier won the first heat race ahead of last starting Damron
and Howard Fergerson. Bill Martinez won heat 2 over Tillinger and Antioch star
Ricardo Rivera. Point leader Chaves beat Ghiorso and Gene Pires Jr. Damron then
won the dash ahead of Chaves and Mosier. Martinez broke in the dash and was a
feature scratch. Damron raced to the feature win from the pole. A lap 2 spin on
the front stretch by Chaves collected nearly half of the field with Rivera
barrel rolling into turn 1. No one was injuried. Damron was chased to his win by
Mosier, Ghiorso, Tillinger, Pires, Chris Dorto, Martin Whittingham, Dave Penny,
Dan Zuger and Chris Weaver. The Bay Area dwarf cars will support the CDCRA
Nationals in Victorville on June 22-24, then return to Ocean Speedway for a show
on June 30. Damron was six points back of Fergerson starting the night and 46
back of Chaves.
The American Stocks split a 24 car turnout into three heat races. When Jennifer
Rood-Ash suffered a broken engine on her normal mount, last week's feature
winner Billy Nelson II immediately offered her his car and she took him up on
the offer. Rod Herrick won heat 1 in his Ford ahead of G Fernandez and Wally
Kennedy. Bill Sorg beat Montgomery and Chad Bisordi in heat 2. Clark Sr was
third in heat 3 as Les Bowers won ahead of Neville. The rapidly improving G
Fernandez enjoyed a big night as he won the dash ahead of Herrick and
Montgomery. Clark Sr was a NASCAR National Short Track champion back when he
raced in the street stocks and he is going to be tough to beat for the 2006
track title. He has won four of the last five races and was chased to this
week's win by G Fernandez, Montgomery, Neville, W Kennedy, Steve Remde, Rood-Ash
in her borrowed car, Norm Ayers and rookie Duane Orsburn. Another Clark
teammate, Albert Acosta, rounded out the top ten. With his great early season
record, Clark Sr has stretched a 32 point lead on G Fernandez and stands 68
points in front of Montgomery. Rood-Ash is fourth, 11 points back of Montgomery.
After a rash of early season
car claims, Ocean Speedway raised the claim in the four bangers from the former
$750 up to $1300. There were 9 four bangers this week including point leader J
Wilson in his newly purchased mount. Rick Steel beat Jimmy Cook and Andrew
Camperud in the heat race. Cook was also a claim victim on opening night and R
Steel now drives that car. R Steel also won the dash over Camperud and J Wilson.
In the feature, it was J Wilson out front for the first time in 2006 and point
runnerup Camperud ran second ahead of Cook, Frank Chaz, Alex Bieser and Wes
Blade. J Wilson holds a 15 point lead on Camperud and Bieser is another 30
points back in third. Despite missing the first race and getting 8th tonight, R
Steel is now 52 points back of the leader in fourth.
June 23 is Big
Brothers/Big Sisters night at the track and the IMCA Modifieds will be chasing a
$1000 win in their feature with $100 guaranteed to all starters. The Ocean Late
Models, American Stocks, Figure 8 and Four Bangers will also race. A big weekend
at the track as the Gene Romero Flat Track Motorcycle Series will visit on
Saturday night June 24.
