by Gary Jacob

Dirt Modifieds, Wingless Spec Sprints, Limited Late Models, Super Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Pure Stocks

Antioch, CA..June 10...Veteran racer Keith Brown Sr drove his Shaw modified to a $600 win in the dirt modified feature at Antioch Speedway on Saturday night and snapped Kellen Chadwick's four race winning streak at the track in the process. Chadwick was in the Sargus Performance mount this night and broke a rear end in his heat. That forced him to tag the 21 car feature, but he still managed to charge to a 2nd place finish ahead of returning star Scott Busby. Chadwick holds a large track point lead, but can't commit to running the full schedule. Point leader Jim Perry III emerged as the winner of a wild wingless spec sprint car feature. Jeff Kindt led much of the race, but got taken out by Danny Olmstead and Perry raced to the victory ahead of female star Brandi Ford and a returning Dan Simpson. Defending track champion Ty Duggins continued his incredible limited late model domination with his third feature win. He has three wins, one second and one third in the five races run to date. Jeff Silva ran second and trails the consistent Duggins by 64 points. David Rosa was a season best third. Todd Gomez added to his super stock point lead with a third win. Third ranked Manny Avila ran second and Terry DeCarlo Jr was third. DeCarlo Jr is second in points, 22 behind Gomez while Avila is tied for third with defending champion Melissa Hansen, four more points back. Duane Daniel got his first dwarf car feature win of the year and Ed Johnson ran second ahead of John Hilbelink. Point leader Jimmy Coppin won the pure stock main ahead of Rob Waldrop, Billy Barnes and Brian Beard II. Oddly, the top four finishers are 1-2-3-4 in points also.

Picking up visitors from both the Petaluma and Merced areas, the dirt modifieds had a 22 car turnout and ran a 21 car feature. Aaron Crowell won the opening heat race over K Brown and Merced's Rodney Freitas. Busy with his construction business, Busby made his season debut with a fourth as he tuned his car up for the Northwest Modified Nationals. Car builder Joe Carr visited from Petaluma and he won heat 2 over Bill Wallace and Debbie Clymens. Merced and Chowchilla star Paul Stone drove his Victory Chassis to a win in heat 3 over Brad Coelho and Robert Norris. Chadwick broke in his heat and had to tag the 21 car feature. Jeff Thomas was the feature scratch. K Brown is seriously chasing the combined Chowchilla-Antioch state title and got his first feature win of 2006 as he held off the fast closing Chadwick. Busby ran a solid third and Freitas ran fourth in just his second ever Antioch visit. Ed Daviess was fifth ahead of Brad Coelho, Merced visitor Johnnie Baptista in his new D&M, Wallace, Don Shelton and Norris. Chadwick's point lead is 42 points over Coelho and 60 ahead of Davies. K Brown is 20 points back of Daviess and 14 ahead of former champion Shelton.

Fourteen wingless spec sprints were divided into two heat races. Olmstead made his first 2006 visit to the ¼ mile clay oval and he won heat 1 over former midget star Matt Streeter and Kindt. Billy Macedo beat Ford and Brian Gray in heat 2. Streeter took dash honors over Olmstead and Macedo. Kindt raced into the feature lead, but Streeter moved up to challenge him. There was contact between the two and Streeter flipped. Olmstead then became the Kindt challenger. Again, there was contact between the two and Kindt spun. Olmstead was disqualified from his feature finish for the rough driving and Perry III raced to the win ahead of Ford, Simpson, point runnerup Jeff Rose, Roy Fisher, Derek Overcamp, David Press, previous week Fernley winner Dan Gonderman and Kindt. Perry is 11 points up on Rose and 29 ahead of both Ford and Fisher.

The limited late models also had a 14 car turnout including the division debut for veteran racer Terry DeCarlo Sr. DeCarlo Sr did win the opening heat race over Silva and John Kriebel with female star Lori Brown fourth. Duggins won heat 2 over Vern Niewald and Rich Quadrelli. Quadrelli led the feature until Mike Gustafson took over. Duggins came from 10th in his win. Silva ran second ahead of Rosa, L Brown, Dave Lexer, DeCarlo Sr, Niewald, Clay Twigg, Gustafson and Quadrelli. Silva moved around Lexer into second in the standings as Lexer stands two points back of Silva and 4 ahead of Twigg. Gustafson is fifth, 10 points back of Silva.

Sixteen super stocks were divided into a pair of heat races and DeCarlo Jr won heat 1 over Chris Sorenson and Gomez. Avila won heat 2 and Petaluma Speedway mini stock star Danny Potts joined the action with a second ahead of Carl Berendsen II. Gomez got his third feature win of the year ahead of Avila, DeCarlo Jr, Potts, Melissa Hansen, Berendsen II, Ken Rhoades, Daniel Mendes, Tony McCown and Dean Plambeck. Twenty dwarf cars were split into three heat races and Daniel had a perfect night as he won heat 1 over Daniel Williams and Tony Carmignani. Hilbelink also had a big night as he won heat 2 ahead of Johnson and Mark Tillinger. Red hot Ricardo Rivera beat Russ Roy and Craig Avery in heat 3. Both Avery and Ricardo broke leading in the feature with Daniel getting the win ahead of Johnson, Hilbelink, Tillinger, Jack Haverty, point leader Carmignani, David Teves, Jacklynn Haverty, R Roy and Ryan Dennis. Carmignani has built a 29 point lead over Rivera with Hilbelink another 24 points back in third. Johnson is 11 more points back in fourth. The pure stocks continue to have solid car counts and they split 17 cars into three heat races. Mark Wilson beat Jon Haney and Waldrop in heat 1 and Mike Matheson won heat 2 over Gene Haney and Jason Robles. Bob Bennett captured heat 3 over Coppin and rookie Barnes. Coppin continues to thrive in the car that Kevin Fitzgerald won the 2005 track title in as he added to his point lead with a feature win ahead of Waldrop, Barnes, Beard, Matheson, Dan McCown, G Haney, Scott Hansen, Robles and Adam Kujala. Coppin is 25 points up on Waldrop, 68 in front of Barnes and 90 ahead of Beard. G Haney is just two points back of Beard in fifth.

It was announced that the June 24th $3000 to win, $300 to start Western Dirt Late Model Tour event here will also pay $100 tow money to teams towing from the Bakersfield-Santa Maria area and further.
