Chowchilla, CA..April 22...2005 track champion Tim Balding followed up a
second place heat race effort with his first $500 dirt modified feature win of
2006 with his Harris Chassis Saturday night as Chowchilla Speedway attracted
another incredible 33 car turnout. Jim DiGiovanni was second in the feature
after a second place heat run and B Main winner Paul Stone battled from the 8th
row to finish third in his Victory Chassis. Heat winner Monty Tomlinson Jr was
fourth. The combination of the CSRA and NCMA wingless spec sprints produced a 22
car turnout and a clean sweep for Danny Olmstead. He won his heat, the dash and
the feature. Usual midget racer Matt Streeter ran second ahead of Larry Nelson
and Allan Clark. Olmstead's win also paid $500. Young Steven Hannah won the
super street stock feature ahead of Antioch visitor Johnny Curtis and
Marysville's Jeff Olschowka, who ran Chowchilla for a third straight weekend.
Defending track hobby stock champion Kevin Pettitt broke his string of bad luck
starts in 2006 by racing to his first main event win ahead of division dominator
Marc Key and Melissa Fuhrman. The big car turnouts produced a time issue and
time ran out before the super fours could contest their main event. In his 2006
debut, Ken Bonnema won the heat race over Darrin Reed and Robbie Loquaci.
The huge turnout of dirt
modifieds were split into five heat races with the top three finishers in each
advancing into the A Main. Tomlinson won the opening heat race from his outside
front row start ahead of back of the pack starter Balding and Kenny Neu. Chris
Compton from Chico won heat 2 ahead of Antioch's Mike Salazar and back of the
pack starter Mitch Enos. Ed Daviess battled through the pack to capture heat 3
ahead of front row starter DiGiovanni and pole starter Alan Pace. Matt Costa
turned an outside front row start into a win in heat 4 over Kurtis Moore and
back of the pack starter Ray Mayer. Keith Brown Sr also battled forward in his
Shaw to win heat 5 ahead of former Antioch titlest Aaron Crowell and Scott
Fuhrman. The B Main was set to transfer five cars into the A Main, but the
scratches of Crowell and Fuhrman allowed the top seven to advance. Stone had run
fourth in his heat, but won the B Main honors ahead of Friday night Hanford
racer Joel Chavez, Kraig Rawls, Dan Graves, Jack VanHoff, Steven Bryant and Brad
Coelho. Just missing the transfer were Watsonville racer John Dawson Jr, Steve
Stone and Tim Goodson. Balding had this track wired in 2005 and tonight was
another impressive effort as he took his first feature win of 2006 ahead of
DiGiovanni, Stone, Tomlinson, Brown Sr, Costa, Neu, Enos, Graves, Pace, Daviess
and Rawls.
The 22 wingless spec
sprints were divided into three heat races. Olmstead won heat 1 over ageless
veteran Gary Koster and Richard Harvey Jr. Harvey was a feature scratch. Jake
Serven outraced Keith Shipherd and another ageless racer Ed Amador in heat 2.
Streeter raced to a win in heat 3 over Watsonville regular Rob Hammond and CSRA
director Nelson. Olmstead added the dash win in front of Streeter, Serven,
Koster, Shipherd and Hammond. The A Main had 20 starters and Olmstead continued
his perfect night as he won in front of Streeter, Nelson, Allan Clark, Koster,
Amador, Hammond, Dennis Fraser, Serven, Shipherd and Jerry Cisco. Top runners
Billy Macedo and David Goodwill got 14th and 15th. Holloway was also a feature
scratch.
Eleven super street stocks were divided into a pair of heat races and Olschowka
won the first ahead of Darren Thomas and Willie Livingston. Roy Hart Jr beat
Petaluma Speedway racer Dusty Welch and Curtis in heat 2. Hannah got fourth in
his heat race and won the main event with Curtis second ahead of Olschowka,
Hart, Mike Angelo, Livingston, Thomas, Joe Fisher and Watsonville's Jason Rood.
The same ten hobby stocks continue to support the track in 2006. Key beat
Pettitt and Jarod Fast in heat 1 and it was M Fuhrman getting the heat two win
over Bob Ackerman and Jay Froman. Pettitt then out dueled Key for the feature
win as M Fuhrman ran third ahead of Jerry Frades, Fast, Les Wasson, Davey Soares
and David Gadth. There were 7 super fours with Bonnema taking heat race honors
over Darrin Reed, Loquaci, Dudley Reed and Kristy Myers. The clock hit 11 before
they could get their feature on the track.
On April 29,
the Bay Area Dwarf Cars visit to join the super street stocks, hobby stocks,
mini stocks, super fours and lady hobby stocks. Don't forget that the Western
Dirt Late Model Tour runs the third race on their schedule here on Saturday
night, May 6.
