PERRY AND DUGGINS WIN ON OPENING NIGHT AT ANTIOCH SPEEDWAY
by Gary Jacob

Wingless Spec Sprints, Limited Late Models, Super Stocks, Dwarf Cars, Pure Stocks, Mini Trux and Four Bangers

Antioch, CA.April 22..After nearly two months of rainouts, Antioch Speedway was finally able to open their 2006 season Saturday night with a huge 7 division show. As expected, the track was very rough after being under water for so long and Jim Perry III raced to the wingless spec sprint feature win after fierce rival Dan Gonderman crashed into a stalled car. David Press ran second ahead of Roy Fisher. Defending limited late model champion Ty Duggins swept that action with wins in his heat and the feature. He won a late race restart duel with Mike Gustafson and early leader Chester Kniss battled back to take second from Gustafson. Having raced the last couple seasons at Chowchilla, Terry DeCarlo Jr returned to Antioch action with a feature win in the super stock main event. Tony McCown ran second ahead of heat winner Daniel Mendes. The dwarf cars had an incredible 34 car turnout and Bay Area Dwarf Car champion Todd Damron emerged as the feature winner after starting the 20 lapper on the pole. Damron's win stopped Tony Carmignani's bid for a clean sweep. After winning his heat and the dash, Carmignani settled for second in the main event ahead of ageless veteran Charlie Correia. Gaining the ride in last year's championship car after Kevin Fitzgerald moved into the dirt modifieds, Jimmy Coppin won the opening night main for the pure stocks ahead of heat winner Rob Waldrop and Gene Haney. After running second to Steve Walde in the heat, Nick Holt won the Mini Trux feature ahead of Walde and Dean Cline. The rough truck especially took it's toll on the four bangers and Derek Dragonetti won the main ahead of Bruno Korbmacher and Dennis Simunovich.

Fifteen wingless spec sprints were divided into a pair of heat races and Dan Simpson won the first ahead of Tyler Henriques and long time modified midget star Derek Overkamp. Craig Smith outraced David Hayes Jr and Jeff Rose in heat 2. Perry ran fifth behind Press in heat 2. The feature saw a duel between Perry and Gonderman that ended when Gonderman was unable to avoid crashing into a stalled Bob Newberry. Perry stayed out front to win ahead of Press, Fisher, Overkamp, Rose, Dan Simpson, Gonderman and Brandi Ford. Smith, Michael Vaughn and Dennis Fuller were all feature scratches. Eleven limited late models checked in with Clay Twigg winning heat 1 over Jeff Silva and Dave Lexer. Duggins outraced David Rosa and Gustafson in heat 2. Gustafson usually misses part of the early season as it conflicts with his CPA tax efforts, but this year the rain put the season opener after April 15. Both Rosa and John Kriebel were feature scratches and Duggins drove to the win ahead of Kniss and Gustafson. Lexer ran fourth ahead of Twigg and rookie Chevy McGinnis, son of long time racer Milt McGinnis. Silva was sidelined in a spectacular fire, but escaped unhurt.

The ten super stocks raced in a single heat race, but two late arrivals give them a 12 car main. D Mendes won the heat race over Carl Berendsen II and Michael Newman. DeCarlo was 8th in the heat race, but raced to the feature win ahead of Tony McCown, D Mendes, Rob Anderson, Berendsen, Newman, Melissa Hansen and Todd Gomez. Three cars each transferred from the four heat races for the huge dwarf car turnout. Daniel Williams won the opening heat race over David Teves. Ricardo Rivera outraced Damron and Correia in heat 2. Troy Wagner bested Jerry Doty in heat 3 and Carmignani won heat 4 over Doug Penny and Sonny Calkin. Doc Bailey took C Main honors ahead of Larry Smith and Butch Liston. Craig Avery won the B Main ahead of Jack Haverty, Jacklyn Haverty, John Hilbelink, Bailey and Bob Accardo. Top runner Matt Sargent had broke in the heat action. A six car inversion for the A Main put Damron on the pole and he won ahead of Carmignani, Correia, Rivera, Williams, Penny, Doty, Calkin, Jaclynn Haverty and Hilbelink. The four heat winners raced in the dash where Carmignani added another win ahead of Rivera and Williams.

Sixteen pure stocks were divided into two heat races and Rob Waldrop won the first ahead of Jason Robles and Billy Barnes. Mark Wilson beat Coppin and Gene Haney in heat 2. Coppin then added the feature win ahead of Waldrop, G Haney, Brian Beard II, Natalie Perry, Dan McCown, Jon Haney, Adam Kujala and Scott Hansen. The Mini Trux had a 7 truck feature. Walde beat Holt and Cline in the heat, but it was Holt winning the feature in front of Walde, Cline, Joe Cambra, Joey Shreffler, Dave Logan and Pete Paulsen. There were 10 four bangers. Doug Taylor won the heat over Korbmacher and Simunovich, but was disqualified from his feature efforts. D Dragonetti missed the heat action, but won the main event ahead of Korbmacher, Simunovich, Ed Randle, Jake Haverty and Jeff Dragonetti.

April 29 will see the Western Dirt Late Model Tour opening their 2006 season at Antioch. Also racing will be the limited late models, super stocks and pure stocks.
