Tucson, AZ...April 15....Doing double duty on the all open wheel night
at USA Race Park, Jerry Coons Jr won the ASCA wingless 360 sprint car feature
and raced Cole Boyd's car to a 2nd behind New Mexico star Rick Ziehl in the
winged sprint car main. Coons drove for Fred Bryan in the ASCA action. It was a
night of seconds for Jeremy Sherman in the ASCA action as he ran second in the
dash, his heat and the feature. Charles Davis Jr won his heat race and ran third
in the feature. Ziehl got $1200 for his winged win and Coons won $600 in the
Boyd car. With SCOA racing at Canyon Raceway, Rickey Hood ran here in the Steve
Cushman cars racing with both ASCA and the local winged sprint class. Hood had
problems in the ASCA main and ran 16th, but placed a $500 third in the winged
sprint car action ahead of Ben Gregg. Adam Millsap won both his heat and the
feature for the modified midgets. After a last place heat finish, Garrett
Guilkey battled to second in the feature ahead of heat winner Jacob Hawkins.
The ASCA wingless 360 sprint car group runs the vast majority of their schedule
at Manzanita Speedway but book a few road trips each season and 23 cars appeared
at the Tucson 3/8 mile clay oval. Sherman had won the last two feature races at
Manzanita but Jeff Henry beat Sherman and Matthew Rossi in the dash. Marty
Miller outraced Coons and Yuma's Mike Martin in heat 1. Davis Jr won heat 2
ahead of Hood and Bret Mellenberndt. Rossi edged out Sherman and dirt modified
graduate Dana Fite in heat 3. Henry ran fourth in heat 3. Coons Jr took feature
honors ahead of Sherman, Davis Jr, Rossi, Josh Pelkey, Mike Leslie, Bernie
Smith, Martin, JT Imperial, Andy Reinbold and Ronnie Clark. Tucson's age limit
rules put young racers Chad Boat and Michael Colegrove in midgets at Prescott
because they needed to be 16 to race here. Sherman came out of the night 108
points up on Pelkey and 186 ahead of Rossi. Miller ran 18th and dropped 15
points back of Rossi, 43 in front of Smith. Henry ran 19th and is 12 points back
of Smith.
With the
double duty drivers, the local winged sprint car action had 17 cars. Coons Jr
won heat 1 over Hood and Ronnie Clark. Steve Stone edged out Ziehl and Gregg in
heat 2. Ziehl raced to the feature win ahead of Coons, Hood, Gregg, Clark,
Michael Bryan, Travis Cooley, Shane Smith, Ron Kratz and Bobby Taylor. Clark and
Taylor also doubled with ASCA.
Hawkins
won the opening heat race for the modified midgets ahead of Nick Aiuto and Josh
Castro. Brendon Higgins was ruled too young to race here earlier this season,
but was allowed to run tonight and palced fourth in heat 1. Millsap edged out
female racer Ashley Robella, Austin Quick and Joey Grimes in heat 2. Millsap
then added the feature win ahead of Guilkey, Hawkins, Brandon Young, Robella,
Aiuto, Quick and Castro. Millsap is the point leader for the 600 division ahead
of Guilkey and Young.
With the big NASCAR weekend
taking place mainly at night in Phoenix, USA Race Park is running some of it's
lower classes on April 22 with the factory stocks, hornets, tuff trucks and mod
lites in action. The winged sprint cars, Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds,
pro stocks and street stocks all return on April 29.
