Pueblo San Felipe, NM....Oct 23....Fighting frozen cold and windy conditions, Hollywood Hills Speedway closed it's 2005 season with a Sunday twilight show with six divisions in action on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Veteran Grants racer Bo Baker drove to wins in both his heat and the feature in the NMMRA Wingless Sprint Cars. 2004 champion Jon Taylor chased B Baker to the win and Jesse Baker rounded out the top 3 in front of impressive rookie Ronnie Smith. Another veteran racer from the Aztec NM area, J J Harpole made it two straight dirt modified wins as he continued his heat race duel with fellow Aztec racer Jeff Davis throughout the entire feature run. Davis ran second and triple division racer Ron Frazier Jr was third. Former IMCA Stock Car racer Andy Hockenhull from Aztec got his third dirt late model feature win and sixth top three finish of his rookie dirt late model season when he outdueled fellow heat race winner Butch Reid Sr in that main event run. Jim Willis made his dirt late model debut for 2005 and ran third in the feature after a second place heat run. Stephen Sanchez made the long tow from Phoenix and won the mini sprint feature ahead of local star Derrick Ortega and Amarillo TX long tow Michael Davidson. Santa Fe's own Joe Smithberger was the street stock feature winner after a second place heat finish. Willis did double duty and ran second in both his heat and the feature in the street stocks as Grants charger D J Hovland ran third. Aztec Speedway had five of their mini stock stars in action and they dominated that feature run. Track champion Josh Brown won ahead of Zach Rouse and David Whiteker. Tom Malloy led the Sandia pavement contingent in fourth as young Courtney Nelson ran fifth. Nearly 100 cars turned out for the final scheduled race in New Mexico in 2005.
Seventeen wingless sprint cars were divided into a pair of heat races. Jeff Brumfield Jr outraced Ronnie Smith and Ted McAdams in heat 1. B Baker captured heat 2 in front of Jason Tanner, Taylor and Kelly Dennison. Nick Rael crashed hard into the front fence in his heat to end his day and he was joined as feature scratches by Russell Gossett and Kristi Smith. B Baker was the feature winner ahead of Taylor, J Baker, Ronnie Smith, McAdams, Dennison, Paul Whitehead, Steve Copeland and Brumfield Jr. Tanner broke while leading and the only other non finisher of the 14 starters was visiting Roger Brewer. The dirt modifieds also had 17 entries and Farmington's Harpole had a perfect night as he won heat 1 over Davis, Mark McClarran and double division Bo Martinez. Richard Johnson won heat 2 over young Nick Nelson from Farmington, Frazier Jr and Reid Sr. The heat action took it's toll in this class as former Mountain Region champion Craig Nelson from Farmington, N Nelson and Kevin McDonald were all main event scratches. Steven Dutcher took over the car that Steve DeBerry wheeled in the heat action. McClarran's car was heavily damged in a huge first lap tangle. Rick Boelter caught fire when he fell out and top runner Johnson also failed to make it to the checkered flag. Harpole and Davis waged another great duel with Harpole the winner over Davis and Frazier Jr. David Sheffield finished strong for fourth over Martinez, who pitted early with a flat tire. Reid Sr ran sixth ahead of Mike O'Neal, Steven Bertetto, Ralph Dutcher and S Dutcher.
The dirt late models had a season high 12 entries and Reid Sr won heat 1 over Willis and Frazier Jr. Very quick El Paso TX entry Curt Barnett backed into the fence in heat 2 to end his night. Hockenhull won heat 2 over Eloy Romero and Steve Suber. Hockenhull also won the feature action ahead of Reid Sr, Willis, Romero, Curt Neff, Suber, Frazier Jr and Tony Currans. Larry Brown joined Barnett as a feature scratch and both Martinez and Monte Neff failed to finish. The visiting cars grew the mini sprint field to 19 cars. Amarillo's Danny Davidson outraced Ortega and Jackson Cerklewski in heat 1. Sanchez failed to finish in this heat. Cerklewski flipped, but he was able to finish out the race and got third ahead of Joe Monteith. Female ace Jennifer Greenberg won heat 2 over Randy Smith, Jordan Mattson and Texas long tow M Davidson. Greenberg again broke in the feature after making major progress from her back row start. Sanchez hung on to get the feature win, finishing just a foot in front of Ortega at the checkered flag. M Davidson ran third over Randy Smith, Mattson, Brian Perea, Jeremy Dockery, Mathew Cordova and Jerill Higginbotham. Cerklewski broke late in the feature run as only ten of the 19 starters saw the checkered flag.
The street stocks had the biggest count with 21 in action. Clay Moseley won heat 1 over Willis and Grants racer Chad Hurtado. Frazier Jr did defeat Smithberger in heat 2 as Andy Tanner ran third. Both Randall Trujillo and Raynaldo Guillen were feature scratches and Smithberger won an outstanding duel with Willis for the win. Hovland finished third ahead of Danny Gross, Frazier Jr, Moseley, Jennifer Zorn, James Tyrell and the hobby stock of George Baisdon. Again, only 9 of 19 finished. The track elected to run the five Aztec mini stocks in their own heat and the 8 Sandia pavement cars in another heat. Whiteker won the dirt track heat over Rouse and Zach Hamilton. Rod Martinez took the Sandia heat in front of Allen Fisk and Perry Held. Larry Johnson failed to start the feature, leaving a dozen starters. Held dropped out after racing a couple laps with his hood up and Andrew Frowner Sr was the only other retiree. Brown had dropped out of the dirt track heat, but won feature honors ahead of Rouse, Whiteker, Malloy, Courtney Nelson, Hamilton, Martinez, Fisk and Henry Anderson.
