Chowchilla, CA .Oct 22...Leading just the final four laps after a wild
encounter between leaders David Goodwill and Steven Williams, Sierra Towing
sponsored Sam Fries was the $1000 winner in the 30 lap feature for the wingless
spec sprints as Chowchilla Speedway closed it's 5th Annual Open Wheel Roundup on
Saturday night. Fries had finished 7th on Friday night to earn his fourth row
start on Saturday night. Goodwill led the first 26 laps from his outside front
row start, but SCRA point leader Williams tried to make a turn 3 slide job for
the lead. Williams ran over the left front wheel on Goodwill sending Goodwill
into a spin. Goodwill was restored to the lead by the officials. While he was
being sent to the rear, Williams suffered a left rear flat and his race was over
as the night had already been extended beyond the 11 o'clock curfew. Fries was
able to duck underneath Goodwill on the restart and lead those final four rows
for the $1000 win. Goodwill settled for the $700 second. Billy Macedo had been
involved in a big first lap tangle, but he was able to make repairs before a lap
was scored. He returned at the rear of the field and raced his way up to third
on lap 28. He finished third for a $500 payday and Jeff Kindt had his second
straight impressive with a $400 fourth ahead of David Press, who won $350. The
midget lite action was scheduled to pay $1000 to win with a full field. Only six
cars appeared between the two nights and Bakersfield long tow Wink Schweitzer
was paid $150 for his 20 lap win. Two of the top cars from Friday night, Jared
Adams and Richard Bailey were both unable to start the 20 lapper. Marshall
Sexton led the first 12 laps before he broke. Schweitzer was out front for the
final 8 laps and Terry Bergstrom ran a $100 second ahead of Saturday arrival and
late race dropout Ryan Silva, who won $90.
In the wingless spec sprints, young Quinton Sall and Keith Cantrell joined the
turnout on Saturday, but top runners Doug Brewer, Dan Gonderman, Ken Fredenburg
and Cameron Beard all failed to return. Todd Vernon and Anthony Ryan broke early
on Saturday night and the B Main was cancelled when only 18 cars survived to
line up for the 30 lapper. The race started with a huge flip on the front
stretch as Roy Fisher got higher than the already tall Chowchilla flagstand as
he rolled at the green flag. He was unhurt and Macedo quickly got his car towed
into the pits for repairs after he ran into a n infield tractor tire. The race
was also restarted after a Shannon Newton spin and cautions were frequent in the
opening laps. Finally, a lap was scored with Friday night runnerup Goodwill
leading Friday night winner Bob Newberry. Rich Crumley spun for the first of his
three cautions. Saturday addition Keith Cantrell lost a wheel to end his race.
Williams was racing in third ahead of Fries and Scott Holloway as Keith Shipherd
and Jerry Cisco both fell out. They finally strung together some consecutive
green flag laps and Williams took second from Newberry on lap 6. Kindt gained
fourth when Fries spun without a yellow flag on lap 8. Fries drove through the
spin and recovered in fifth. Orland's Josh Tucker spun for a lap 9 yellow. Fries
retook fourth from Kindt on lap 13. Newberry lost third when he stalled for a
lap 16 yellow flag. On the restart, Goodwill led Williams, Fries, Kindt and
Press. Macedo had came all the way back to sixth over Holloway and Saturday
addition Quinton Sall. Crumley spun for a lap 22 yellow and he was parked in the
infield as the time had already run past 11 o'clock. On lap 27, Williams tried
to charge underneath Goodwill as they raced into turn 3. Williams ran over the
left front wheel for Goodwill, sending Goodwill spinning. As the cars circled
the track, Goodwill was restored to the lead and Williams sent to the rear. As
Williams coasted his way back through the field, his left rear tire went flat
and the officials could not give him time to make repairs. Fries was the right
person at the right place at the right time as he ducked underneath Goodwill on
the green flag to pace those final four laps for the $1000 win. A very
disappointed Goodwill settled for second ahead of an excited Macedo, Kindt,
Press, Holloway, veteran Dave Ellis, Tucker and newcomer J W Wilson. Williams
was placed in tenth.
The Saturday addition of Silva gave the midget lites a six car turnout, but
Friday night winner Jared Adams discovered unrepairable damage and scratched.
Turner of the fastest laps of the weekend, Richard Bailey discovered motor woes
and trailered his car before the feature green flag. Sexton raced into the lead
and paced the first 12 laps with a best lap of 16.34 before his car broke.
Schweitzer had taken second from Bergstrom on lap 6 and he stayed out the rest
of the way for the $150 win. Schweitzer's best lap while leading was a 15.98
clocking. He quickly opened a ? lap over Bergstrom and Silva, but Silva pulled
off the track on lap 18. Schweitzer led Bergstrom at the checkered flag.
A second big weekend of racing at Chowchilla starts on Thursday night Oct 27.
The dirt modifieds, super street stocks and hobby stocks will be featured.
Thursday is hot laps, a time trial competition and a BBQ. Friday will see the
heats and dashes while the big money features run on Saturday night. A new idea
out of the Tom Sagmiller thought box has a last chance show on Sunday when
everyone but the Saturday night top 3 finishers in each class can return to
chase additional prize money in a complete new show. The Saturday night features
pay $3000 to win in the dirt modifieds, $2000 to win in the super street stocks
and $800 to win in the hobby stocks. On Sunday, the dirt modifieds run for $600
to win, the super street stocks $500 to win and the hobby stocks $300.
