Chowchilla, CA...Oct 21...After drawing the pole position, Antioch
veteran Bob Newberry raced to a wire to wire 20 lap win in the preliminary night
feature for the wingless spec sprints on Friday night as Chowchilla Speedway
opened their 5th Annual Open Wheel Shootout. Newberry's win earned him $200 and
David Goodwill charged from 13th to make a last lap move from 4th to 2nd to earn
$100. Scott Holloway won $90 for third as the 15 car preliminary night feature
set the lineup for the front 15 spots in Saturday night's $1000 to win action.
SCRA point leader Steven Williams won both his heat and the $50 dash, but could
only come from 12th to 4th in the 20 lapper. Shannon Newton ran fifth. Over 30
dwarf cars appeared for their regional event and the Friday night feature
determined the ten starters in a dash on Saturday that will set the order for
the front five rows in their final night feature. NorCal racer Mike Grenert from
Travis Air Force Base took the lead from Al Ghiorso on lap 10 and won the 20
lapper. Ghiorso broke while 2nd and Mark Chaves ran second ahead of back of the
pack starter Todd Damron, the Bay Area champion. Antioch titlest Ricardo Rivera
ran fourth ahead of Bay Area rookie Dave Mosier. The midget lite feature is also
set to pay $1000 to win on Saturday night, but only five teams appeared for
Friday night's action and Jared Adams turned his pole start into a wire to wire
win in the 10 lap feature over fellow late arrival Terry Bergstrom and dash
winner Richard Bailey. Adams got $50 for the feature win and Bailey $50 for the
dash win. The super fours had an interesting mix of teams in their 16 car
turnout and Fresno's Ron Martinez won the 15 lap qualifying night feature ahead
of Arizona's Ike Reed, Oregon transplant Tom Williams from Tulare, modified four
racer Danny Luukkennon and Antioch-Orland truck racer Tony Boscacci. After
Robbie Loquaci won both the dash and heat for the 8 entry mini four class, track
champion Russ Myers took the lead from Antioch truck racer Alan Heeney on lap 3
and 10 lap preliminary feature over Ed Heeney, A Heeney and Loquaci.
The Wingless Spec Sprint action drew a 22 car field and the top five finishers
in each of their three heat races won the right to race in the preliminary night
feature. Williams had an outside front row start in heat 1 and ran a best lap of
15.69 as he won ahead of pole starter Sam Fries, David Press and Keith Shipherd.
Veteran Dave Ellis blew a tire early in the race. Heat 2 got off to a wild start
as Dan Gonderman suffered a struck throttle on lap 1. He ran over the front end
of Watsonville regular Kenny Fredenburg and then flipped out of the ballpark,
scaling the fence in turn 4. Gonderman was unhurt, but his car suffered heavy
damage. Fredenburg's night was over and Newton had to pit with a flat tire.
Newton came back to finish third behind fifth starting Scott Holloway and third
starter Newberry. Holloway's best lap was a 16.19. Late arrival Jerry Cisco ran
fourth. Enjoying his most impressive night in this class, Antioch racer Jeff
Kindt won heat 3 from 4th with a best lap of 16.13. Billy Macedo ran second
ahead of sixth starting Goodwill and third starter Roy Fisher. The dash paid $50
to win and recent college graduate Williams again ripped off a quick lap of
16.00 as he won ahead of Holloway and Kindt. All 15 cars that qualified through
the heat action drew for their starting order in the 20 lap preliminary night
feature. Newberry and Kindt drew the front row ahead of Press, Holloway, Cisco,
Todd Vernon, Fries and Fisher with several top hitters having to come from the
rear. Doug Brewer escaped unhurt when he flipped in turn 2 on the opening round.
The talented field then ripped off 17 laps with just a single yellow flag.
Newberry raced into the lead over Kindt, Holloway, Fisher and D Press. Newton
settled into sixth with Goodwill and Williams quickly racing into the top 8.
Goodwill climbed to sixth on lap 6 and Rick Crumley spun for a lap 8 yellow
flag. Williams grabbed sixth from Goodwill on this restart, but Goodwill
regained sixth on lap 13 as the top five remained unchanged. When D Press got
too high and fell out of the top five on lap 15, contact from Goodwill nearly
put Williams into the front fence, but Williams avoided the accident and managed
to recover in fifth behind Newberry, Kindt, Holloway and Goodwill. The last
yellow came on lap 17 as D Press, Keith Shipherd and Macedo got tangled up in
turn 1. Only Macedo was able to continue and Vernon also pitted. Kindt's perfect
feature ended when he got into the infield tire coming off turn 2 on the last
lap. That shuffled the standings with Newberry getting his wire to wire win as
Goodwill emerged in second ahead of Holloway, Williams, Newton, Fisher, Fries,
Cisco, Crumley, Macedo and Kindt.
The top 3 from four heat races advanced into the dwarf car first night feature.
Antioch titlest Rivera won heat 1 from third with a best lap of 18.49 as Mark
Tillinger ran second ahead of Dan Zuger. Scott Dahlgren captured heat 2 from an
outside front row start, but broke an engine in the process and was done for the
night. Grenert ran second ahead of Ryan Ameln and Brett Barstow. Dahlgren's best
lap was 18.79. Heat 3 saw newcomer Greg Avery and Howard Fergerson crash while
leading, collecting Dave Penny. Last starter Mosier inherited the lead and won
with a best lap of 18.68 ahead of Bill Martinez, Martin Whittingham and Penny.
Damron had the pole for heat 4, but broke leading. Gilbert Toste and Kevin
Bender tangled while dueling for 2nd and Tommy Astone III blew while in third.
Ghiorso made an outside pass on the last lap as he beat Chaves and turned a
quick lap of 18.44. Pat Weger ran third over Toste. Damron got his car running
again as he won the C Main over Dale Costa and Chris Weaver. Troy Wagner spun
while 2nd. In the B Main, a spinning Jerry Doty clipped Wever and Costa was hit
by Bender when he spun. Toste broke leading and Damron also lost power while in
front. Fergerson raced to the 15 lap win over Penny, Dan Weger, Josh Hiatt,
Costa and Jimmy Herd. Damron got lapped a couple times after he slowed, but his
persistence earned him a transfer. The talented A Main field for the dwarf cars
ran 17 laps without a caution. Ghiorso raced into the lead over Mosier, Grenert
and Ameln. Tillinger took fifth from Rivera on lap 2. Grenert got underneath
Mosier for second on lap 5 and he quickly closed on leader Ghiorso. Grenert took
the lead from Ghiorso with an inside pass in turn 2 on lap 10. Chaves had broken
into the top five on lap 7 and he went underneath Ameln for fourth on lap 12.
When Ghiorso broke while 2nd on lap 14, Chaves emerged in second ahead of
Mosier, Ameln and Rivera. Ameln took third on lap 17 and a tangle between
Fergerson and Tony Miller broke out a final yellow flag. Rivera raced into
fourth on the restart and Grenert won ahead of Chaves, a fast closing Damron,
Rivera, Mosier, Ameln, P Weger, Hiatt and Tillinger. Dan Weger got the tenth
slot.
The midget lite field included Bakersfield's Wink Schweitzer and four BCRA cars.
Schweitzer got the heat win when young Bailey lost power while leading on the
last lap. Schweitzer had run a 16.14 while leading, but Bailey stepped it up to
a 15.64 when he was in front. Bailey did salvage second ahead of Marshall
Sexton. Bailey ran a 15.56 best lap as he won the dash over Sexton and
Schweitzer. Bergstrom got his car running just in time to tag the dash. Trailer
mates Adams and Bergstrom shared the front row for the feature and they ran 1-2
all the way with winner Adams getting his time down to 16.09 on the final round.
Bergstrom ran second in the caution free race ahead of Bailey, Schweitzer and
Sexton.
Seventeen cars and trucks signed in to race in the super four action. Ron German
from Atascadero ran a best lap of 19.62 as he won heat 1 over Martinez and
Boscacci. Allen DeLoura crashed while third in heat 2 as Tulare's Williams won
in his first Chowchilla appearace ahead of I Reed and Darren Reed. Martinez got
into the infield while running away with the dash. He recovered to retake the
lead from Williams only to be called for rough driving and dropped to last
behind $50 winner Williams and I Reed. Martinez ran a 19.76 lap in the dash.
German sat out the dash, but charged from the 7th row into the lead on the
opening lap of the feature only to be unable to fire after a lap 2 red flag,
ending his night. Chris Hicks, Kristy Myers and Boscacci tangled on the first
lap of the main and German emerged leading Antioch truck racers Eric Bookout and
David Gonzales. When German was pushed off the track, Bookout was the new leader
but he only paced two laps ahead of Williams and I Reed before Martinez made a
big move from fourth to first on lap 5. I Reed claimed second on lap 6 and
Williams was third a lap later. Martinez quickly built his lead to ? lap and
Bookout lost fourth to Luukkennon on lap 10. A yellow fell for a tangle between
Antioch racer Wayne DeRuyter and Darren Reed. Martinez led the rest of the way
to win ahead of I Reed, Williams, Luukkennon, Boscacci, late arrival Ken Bonnema
in a former Lakeport Speedway I-4 Modified and Darren Reed. Dudley Reed broke in
hot laps and Ron Crissafulli also did not race after hot laps. Bonnema's entry
in the former Shawn Shearer car.
Loquaci's best lap was 22.32 as he won the mini four heat race over R Myers and
Ed Heeney. Loquaci clicked off a 22.10 as he won the $50 dash ahead of E Heeney
and R Myers. In their 10 lap preliminary night feature, Loquaci was spun by A
Heeney as he attempted to take third from him. A Heeney had led the first two
laps over R Myers and E Heeney. R Myers took the lead from A Heeney on lap 3 and
E Heeney was second two laps later. Loquaci had just passed A Heeney for third
when a tap from A Heeney turned him. Rusty Neal also spun in the incident. R
Myers led the rest of the way to beat E Heeney. A Heeney ran all of the track
blocking Loquaci's efforts to gain third and Loquaci sent A Heeney spinning on
the cool down lap. Tim Mathers ran fifth.
