by Gary Jacob

Wingless 410 Sprint Cars and Winged Sprint Cars

Tucson, AZ..Oct 8..After setting his first fast time of the season, Ventura's Cory Kruseman ran second in his heat and paced the final 7 laps to get his 8th USAC/CRA feature win of 2005 in Saturday night's 30 lapper as the touring series for wingless 410 sprint cars visited USA Race Park for the first time. Kruseman battled from 8th in his Glenn Crossno owned mount as Arizona star Jeremy Sherman in a Priestley entry and Jerry Coons Jr in an Alexander car dueled out front. Sherman led from lap 3 to lap 6, then it was Coons from lap 7-15 before Sherman again emerged as the leader from lap 16-23. Kruseman paced the final 7 rounds and closed to within four points of second ranked Rip Williams, who had engine woes and didn't even qualify for the main event. Seventh starting Damion Gardner protected his point lead in the Ron Chaffin car by making a late climb to second ahead of Coons, Mike Kirby and Sherman. Gardner's point lead is 90 over Williams and 94 over Kruseman. Kirby is solidily in fourth. In the 25 lap feature for the track's winged sprint car class, MoPar raced Brian O'Donnell got his first win ahead of double division racers Jeff Slinkard and Rickey Hood. Hood had spun early in the race. His team did the double by taking the wing on and off the car all night and making other adjustments. After his second in the winged race, Jeff Slinkard flipped in the wingless feature and got hit while on his side. He suffered a minor back injury and brief swelling of his head.

The traveling USAC/CRA wingless band brought a 29 car field to Tucson and Kruseman posted his first fast time effort of the season with a 15.852 clocking on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Gardner ran 16.083 and Rickie Gaunt had a 16.111. Sherman posted a 16.216 and Mike Spencer ranked fifth at 16.233. Hood put the Cushman entry in sxith at 16.240 and Charles Davis Jr put the second Smiley team car in 7th ahead of Hermansader, Danny Ebberts and Coons Jr. Ebberts won heat 1 over Kruseman and Gardner beat Phoenix radio personality Bruce St James in heat 2. Kevin Kierce was in the Ron Bach entry and won heat 3 ahead of Matt Rossi. Kirby won heat 4 ahead of Ryan Devitt. The 12 lap B Main transferred the final four cars into the 20 car feature and Gaunt got that win ahead of Hermansader, Slinkard and Chuck Buckman. Just missing transfers were Ronnie Clark, Mike Leslie and Tom Ogle, who was wheeling a car won in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame raffle. Ogle had hit the front wall in hot laps. Top runners Rip Williams and R J Johnson had engine woes and both pulled off in the B Main. In the 30 lap feature, Coons and Ebberts shared the front row ahead of Davis, Seth Wilson, Spencer, Sherman, Gardner and Kruseman. Ebberts paced the first 2 laps, then Sherman took over for four. Coons was in command of the race when Slinkard flipped on the front stretch and got hit while on his side for a red flag on lap 15. When racing resumed, Sherman took the lead from Coons and set the pace until succumbing to the challenges of Kruseman. Contact on a restart after a late race yellow cost Sherman second and Coons was passed on the final lap by Gardner for second. Coons ran third ahead of Kirby, Sherman, 15th starter Rick Ziehl from Las Cruces NM, Ebberts, Hermansader, Gaunt and Rossi. The series returns to Perris Auto Speedway on Oct 22.

There were 16 winged sprint cars and the heat wins went to Cole Boyd and Hood. Both Mike Rux Jr and Steve Stone were feature scratches and third starter O'Donnell won the 25 lapper ahead of fifth starting Slinkard. Hood spun during the race and restarted in the rear, rallying to a third place finish ahead of front row starter Boyd, 7th starting Chuck Buckman and point leader Kaylene Verville. Verville had engine woes in her heat and also had to come from the rear in the feature after a spin.  Rick Sipes ran 7th ahead of Ben Gregg, Steve Sussex and Travis Cooley. The winged sprint cars return to Tucson on Oct 15 when they will be joined by the pro stocks, factory stocks, mini sprints and modified midgets.
