Tucson, Az..Oct 1..The ASCA wingless 360 sprint cars made their first
visit to USA Race Park on Saturday night and 2000 series champion Marty Miller
won the 25 lap feature after earlier capturing his heat race. He started sixth
in the 23 car feature and was third on the opening lap. He had the lead on lap
8. It was his first win of 2005 and J T Imperial also enjoyed his best finish of
the year in second. Rickey Hood made a rare ASCA start and captured third ahead
of runaway point leader Jeremy Sherman. Daniel Hutto got his first dirt modified
win of 2005 and young Corey Hosler Jr chased him to the checkered flag. R C
Whitwell rounded out the top three. The street stocks also had a first time
winner as Toby Olds beat Tom Campbell and Todd Simmons.
The ASCA club is spending
nearly their entire season at Manzanita Speedway in 2005, but still traveled
with 25 cars down to Tucson. Jay Ervine won the Arizona Race Mart Dash ahead of
Sherman and Ben Gregg. The field was divided into four heat races with the top
four from each advancing into the 25 lapper. Jeff Henry won the opening heat
race over Mike Bonneau and Ervine. Tucson's Mike Martin outraced Josh Pelkey and
Imperial in heat 2. Miller had a perfect night as he won heat 3 ahead of Gregg
and Matt Rossi. Andrew Reinbold outraced Chris Bonneau and Bernie Smith in heat
4. Sherman clipped an infield tire in heat 4 and had to battle through the B
Main. Phoenix radio personality Bruce St James won the B Main ahead of Bobby
Boone, Sherman, young Chad Boat and Ronnie Clark. Both Clark and Art Mankel were
unable to start the 25 lapper, leaving a 23 car lineup. Glendale's Miller
started the feature in sixth, was third on the first lap and grabbed the top
spot on lap 8. Imperial chased him across the finish line with Hood in third.
Sherman battled to a fourth ahead of Gregg, Reinbold, Rossi, Boone, Ervine and
Nathan High. Josh Pelkey ran 11th and is a distant second behind Sherman in the
point standings. High in just 9 points in front of Henry in their duel for third
in the standings.
There were 25
dirt modifieds. While the Barnett Harley Davidson point window ended in
September, USA Race Park is still awarded points to the division to crown a
separate track champion. One race remains on Oct 22. Hutto is ranked third in
points and his win left him 12 points behind Whitwell. Hosler is fourth in
points, 23 behind Hutto. Whitwell's third combined with an 8th for point leader
Carl Trimmer left Whitwell 17 points out of the lead. Chuck Wares continues to
adapt to the dirt action and he finished fourth ahead of Brian Gardner, Dana
Fite, Troy Hoey, Trimmer, Cody Cambensy, Ron Bishop, Mike Brandon and Todd
Campbell. The 20 car street stock feature saw a rare back of the pack finish for
runaway point leader Ted Robinson as he ran 16th. Olds win moved him into a tie
for third in points with Billy Williams. Tom Campbell ran second in the feature
run ahead of Simmons, Sean Teeters, Dana Boatwright, Jason Rominger, James Lemas
and point runnerup Chris Dobbs. Dobbs is 66 points back of Robinson and 14 ahead
of the tied duo of Olds and B Williams.
Oct 8 will see an all sprint car night at the 3/8 mile clay oval as the USAC/CRA
wingless 410 sprint cars visit for the first time and the track's own winged
sprint car division will race with them.
