Wingless Sprint Cars, Pony Stocks and Dwarf Cars

Ventura, CA.....Sept 24......Battling forward from fourth starting, second ranked Kevin Kierce got his third VRA wingless 360 sprint car 30 lap feature win of 2005 in Saturday night's 30 lapper. His win in the Ray Swan owned car was worth $1000 and former champion Greg Taylor charged from 9th to finish a $750 second. Runaway point leader Blake Miller from Yorba Linda was a $500 third after starting on the pole. Second starting Wiley Miller won his fourth senior sprint 20 lap in 14 events from 2nd starting to protect his point leader. His brother Danny Miller ran second. D Miller is B Miller's father. Third ranked Bob Alderman finished third and point runnerup Ron Bach was fourth. The pony stock track title fight is going right down to the final night. Defending champion Mike Frazier won from 7th to give him four 20 lap wins in 2005. Andrew Greiman ran second from sixth starting and also has four wins. Each has 8 heat race wins and Frazier's point lead is just 75 over Greiman. Pole starter Brad Long was third in the feature. The VRA Pro Dwarf Car action is all Brian Saxton from Mentone in 2005. This week, he won from fifth starting and now has 9 wins in 12 point races. He has an incredible 495 point lead with only 220 points available each race night. Chris Taylor is making a late season charge at second in points as he ran second ahead of Robert Hansen. Second ranked Chuck Lippert finished 12th and holds just a 140 point lead on John Lynch and a 160 point margin on C Taylor. The Senior dwarf action had a 17 car turnout this week and another clean sweep put Port Hueneme's Ed Niedzwiecki in the point lead. He won both his heat and the feature from fifth starting and championship rival Mike Sweeney, the defending champion had a similar night. Sweeney won his heat from sixth and then ran second in the feature, again from sixth. Each has won five of the 12 point races and Niedzwiecki's point lead is five over Sweeney. Bill VanPraag was third in the 20 lapper.

The VRA sprint cars split 27 cars into four heat races. Oren Prosser Jr won heat 1 from the outside front row ahead of pole starter Joe Henderson. Ronnie Case crashed with David Sinsley. New Zealand's Brandon Rowlands visited with a fifth. Kierce had a perfect night as he won heat 2 from fifth starting ahead of young Brandon Thomson and Taylor. B Miller used an outside groove pass on Luis Espinoza to win heat 3 with division rookie Angel Figueroa in third. Chris Wakim leaped out of the second row to win heat 4 over Ryan Devitt and San Jose's Michael Trimble. With four transfers from each heat, the B Main had 11 starters and again transferred four. Rowlands and Wes Richardson held down the front row and it was Richardson out front all the way in the 12 lapper. Last week's feature winner Steve Conrad broke in his heat, but came from 4th to get second in the B Main with Dennis Rodriguez and 8th starting Case also transferring. Rob Kershaw started 9th and just missed in fifth ahead of Mark Weitzman and Rowlands. The lineup for the 30 lap feature found B Miller and Prosser Jr in the front row ahead of Wakim, Kierce, Joe Henderson and B Thomson. On the first start attempt, Kierce raced around both B Miller and Wakim to lead, but Case flipped in turn 3 to force a restart. Wakim found himself with a nerf bar cutting his tire so he had to pit and restart in the rear. B Miller takes an early lead over Prosser Jr and Kierce. Prosser Jr raced into the lead over B Miller, but couldn't fend off the challenges of Kierce. Kierce took an early lead over Prosser Jr, B Thomson, Taylor and B Miller. The 30 lapper was run at a very rapid pace and only the top six were on the lead lap at the end. Taylor was providing a stiff challenge for leader Kierce when he jumped the cushion and lost ground. Kierce got his win with Taylor second ahead of B Miller. Prosser Jr ran fourth ahead of Devitt and Henderson, the final lead lap cars. Figueroa was a lap down in 7th ahead of Rodriguez, Richardson and John Nock. Espinoza fell out after 21 laps and Wakim was out on lap 3. Conrad finished 14th. B Miller is 1985 ahead of Kierce with 1050 points available each night. Wakim is third in points ahead of Espinoza and Conrad.

The senior sprints split 15 cars into two heat races. Bruce Douglas won heat 1 from fourth. A last lap spin dropped Grady Winkler to third behind Ron Bach. On a very wet track, Jim Porter easily won heat 2 from the pole with Alderman second as D Miller ran third ahead of 7th starting W Miller. The lineup for their 20 lapper put Tim Moon and W Miller in the front row ahead of D Miller , Winkler, Alderman and Bach. Heat winners Porter and Douglas shared row 4. The outside front row start allowed W Miller to stretch a big lead over D Miller, Moon and Alderman. Moon had fallen back at the first yellow on lap 6 as Alderman gained third over Porter, Bach and Douglas. Porter fell off the pace at the midway mark and W Miller ran to the win ahead of D Miller, Alderman, Bach, Douglas, Porter, John Richards and Dave Marini, the final lead lap car. Moon fell out on lap 6 and dropped to fourth in points behind Alderman. W Miller's point lead is 1210 over Bach. Alderman is only 90 ahead of Moon.

The Pony Stock count improved to 16 and Brad Long won heat 1 from the pole over Jim Evans and Frazier. Greiman came from fourth to win heat 2 in front of Jack Hoyt and Paul Johnson. Mark Woellert was out on lap 1 of the feature and both Joe Weaver and Jon Fitzsimmons were out on lap 3. The top 8 finished lead lap with Frazier winning from 7th ahead of sixth starting Greiman. Long ran third from the pole over Evans and Hoyt. P Johnson started 2nd and ran sixth over David Peterson and 14th starting Adam McPhail. Jesse Farless and Ken Teeter rounded out the top ten.

Thirteen Pro Dwarfs were divided into two heat races and C Taylor won the first from third. Hansen ran second ahead of Lippert. Saxton came from fourth to win heat 2 over Thomas Velasquez and Lynch. Again, three early retirees in the 20 lapper as both Lippert and Jeff Fillingame were out on lap 3 and Michael Allawos fell out on lap 5. Saxton won from fifth ahead of C Taylor, Hansen, Chad Kincaid, Lynch and Velasquez, the final lead lap car. James Johnson, Delaney Bakke and Diana Marshall were all one lap down. Sweeney won the first senior dwarf car heat from sixth over front row starter Dave Revard and 7th starting Paul Sanders. Niedzwiecki came from fifth to win heat 2 over front row statter VanPraag and Jim Soltis. Soltis scratched from the feature and Linda Taylor was sidelined on lap 1. Mike Bailey, Sanders and Steve Addison were all out early and six cars finished lead lap. Niedzwiecki stayed red hot with his fifth win ahead of Sweeney, VanPraag, 8th starter Tom Bellinger, 16th starter Glen Monk and third ranked Jerry Doolittle. Revard ran 7th ahead of Jon Prechtl, Jerre Hinton and Tom Sera. Doolittle is 480 points back of Sweeney.
