Wingless Sprint Cars and Dirt Modifieds

Show Low, AZ..Sept 24...The SCRL wingless sprint cars returned to Thunder Raceway for the second straight month and August winner Johnny Herrera from Albuquerque got another feature win after earlier taking his heat race. A 17 car field appeared and Herrera was chased across the finish line by Las Cruces NM star Rick Ziehl and Grants NM charger Jesse Baker. Ziehl had also won his heat race while the third heat race went to Grants veteran Bo Baker. The Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds closed their season and Eric Kelley won his second straight feature to finish third in points. 2004 champion Max Sadler had his best night of the year with a heat win and a second in the main event. Tony Croninger ran third and fell one point short of overtaking Richie Davis for third in points. Dan Radcliff Jr was fourth and finished 14 points back of track champion Norman Uptain, who ran 6th in the finale. Duncan AZ long tow Mike Money had his best run of the year with a fifth.

The sprint cars were split into three heat races and Herrera won the first over 2004 NMMRA champion Jon Taylor and James High. B Baker outraced Show Low's own Robert Hall Jr and Ron Kratz in heat 2 and Ziehl won heat 3 over Tucson point leader Kaylene Verville and Andrew Reinbold. Herrera then wheeled his father's car to the main event win ahead of Ziehl, J Baker, Hall, B Baker, Reinbold, Ron Clark, Kratz, Taylor and Verville. Top runner Jason Tanner had a tough night with a last in his heat and a 14th in the feature.

There were 24 dirt modifieds on hand, but only 21 survived to race in the feature action. Tucson youngster Corey Hosler Jr made the tow up the mountain for the first time and ran second behind Sadler in his heat, but placed 18th in the feature run. Jeff Anderson won heat 1 over Kelley and Money. Sadler outraced Hosler and Todd Hamblen in heat 2 and it was Terry Howard winning heat 3 over Croninger and Uptain. Kelley won the main event for the second straight week and Sadler ran second ahead of Croninger, Radcliff, Money, Uptain, Brandon Garner, Hamblen, Davis, Jack Smith, Anderson and Warren Wampole. Kelley finished 15 points back of Radcliff and 31 ahead of Davis. Sadler overtook Howard to finish sixth as Howard's 16th place run left him one point behind Sadler. Anderson ranked 8th.
