Pueblo San Felipe, NM...Sept 10....Rebounding from a very hard crash in
Clovis NM last weekend, Robert Marfia drove to wins in both his heat race and
the feature for the NMMRA wingless sprint cars Saturday night at Hollywood Hills
Speedway. Jason Tanner provided a major challenge in the feature, but suffered a
flat tire with one lap to go while second. Jody Williams ended up second ahea
dof Larry Stoerkel. The dirt modified feature went to California transplant Mark
McClarran. McClarran raced briefly at Merced Speedway before moving to the
Albuquerque area several years ago. Dirt late model winner Butch Reid Sr ran
third until the final two laps when he drove around Richard Johnson to finish
second. Johnson settled for third ahead of Bo Martinez. Some tough action last
week and a major event in Utah limited the dirt late models to six cars and
Butch Reid Sr posted another feature win after falling out of his heat race.
Coming off a pair of $1000 wins in Tucson last weekend that gave the Barnett
Harley Davidson Touring Series championship, Curt Barnett brought his dirt late
model out of mothballs and ran second ahead of Ron Frazier Jr. After he ran
second in his heat race, Mike Mendoza was a wire to wire winner in the hobby
stock feature over Curt Neff and previous week winner Ron Leathem.
The NMMRA group had raced
a two night show in Clovis the previous weekend and appeared with 14 cars at the
big Hollywood Hills track. Marfia won the opening heat race over visitor Brandon
Schure, a 15 year old from El Paso TX. Stoerkel ran third. Tanner outraced
Williams and Jon Taylor in heat 2. Marfia had flipped off the end of the track
into a corn field at Clovis, but raced to tonight's feature win. A hard heat
race crash tonight found a spun Jeff Brumfield Jr getting hit by Kelly Dennison
and Tom Ball. Both Dennison and Ball were able to start the main event while
Brumfield and Kevin Faber both scratched. The last lap flat tire by Tanner
allowed Williams to run second in the feature ahead of Stoerkel, Dennison,
Taylor, female racer Kristi Smith, Ball and Russell Gossett.
The 13 car
dirt modified field was exactly half of the 26 that chased last weekend's $1000
prize. Last weekend's winner Lorne Wofford towed all the way to Olathe CO for a
$5000 to win special and came home with the $2500 second place money behind
Texan Alan Sharpensteen there. Johnson won the opening heat race over McClarran
and Rick Boelter. Young Steven Dutcher drove the car that he shares with father
Ralph Dutcher in heat 1, then turned the car over to Ralph for heat 2 and the
feature. David Sheffield edged out Reid Sr and Kevin McDonald in heat 2.
McClarran was a wire to wire winner in the feature, but had to fend off stiff
challenges from Johnson and Reid Sr. Reid Sr got around Johnson with two laps to
go to finish second. Johnson settled for third ahead of Ford devotee Martinez
and Gallup's Kevin Menapace, who started in the back row. Kenny Wheeler bounced
back from a hard crash last week to get sixth ahead of R Dutcher and Donald
Klinger. The cars of Marc Herrera and Larry Brown are both being repaired and
Steve Conrad Jr sold his car to leave six dirt late models. Monte Neff had
engine woes in hot laps that ended his night. Frazier Jr beat Barnett and Eloy
Romero in the heat action. Reid Sr fell out of the heat race, but won the
entertaining feature duel with Barnett and Frazier Jr. Romero ran fourth ahead
of Steve Suber. There were 13 hobby stocks and Donnie Goss beat Mendoza in heat
1. Dan Harmon outraced Ray Munoz in heat 2. The entire night of racing for the
hobby stocks had just a single yellow flag when Curt Neff and newcomer Roger
Soliz tangled, ripping off the front bumper on the Soliz car. Mendoza was the
feature winner ahead of a late challenge by C Neff. A late move by Leathem
gained him third. Goss spun out of fourth from contact by Harmon at the
checkered flag. Harmon was penalized back to fifth with Goss given fourth.
Randall Trujillo ran sixth ahead of Munoz, Bob Scribner and Staci March.
The track is dark
on Sept 17, but returns to action on Sept 24.
