Show Low, AZ..August 26-27...The two most famous of the 22 wingless
sprint cars racing at Thunder Raceway on Saturday night dueled for the SCRL
feature win and Johnny Herrera out dueled Rickey Hood for the feature honors.
Herrera is driving the car that Hood drove for years here in 2005. A late race
bobble by Ronnie Clark allowed New Mexico's Jason Tanner to finish third as
Clark settled for fourth. Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modified point leader
Norman Uptain won their feature race to build his point lead to 22 points. 2004
champion Max Sadler ran second ahead of Paul Banghart and Eric Kelley. The pro
stocks were booked for Friday night along with a practice session for the
wingless sprint cars. Kent Nelson beat point leader Tim Thomas and Charlie
Mitchell in a short field.
Clark beat Herrera and Rick
Ziehl in the first heat for the wingless sprint cars. New Mexico champion Jon
Taylor won heat 2 over Show Low's own Robert Hall Jr and Tanner. Bo Baker beat
Hood and Shon Deskins in heat 3. Herrera out dueled Hood for the feature honors
with Tanner making his late move around Clark for third. Scott Box from New
Mexico ran fifth ahead of Andrew Reinbold, Yuma's Mike Martin, Jesse Baker, B
Baker, L C Kesterson, James Aragon and Ron Kratz.
There were 19 dirt
modifieds and they were split into three heat races. Banghart missed last week's
race because his hometown track swung back into action after their summer break.
He returned with a win in heat 1 over Kelley and Warren Wampole Jr. Tony
Croninger beat Uptain and Joey Wampole in heat 2. Dan Radcliff Jr had a big
night as he won heat 3 over Sadler and Richie Davis, then captured the Dash in
front of Davis and Croninger. Terry Howard, Ross Black and Chisom Billingsly
were all unable to start the feature action and Jeff Anderson ended up being
disqualified from his finish. Uptain was the feature winner ahead of Sadler,
Banghart, Kelley, Troy Cooke, W Wampole Jr, Radcliff, Jim Bender, Don Sterbutzel
and track promoter Bob Livingston. Uptain is 22 points up on Radcliff. Kelley
moved three points up on Croninger in their duel for third. Davis is 15 behind
Croninger.
The short
field of pro stocks were kept busy on Friday night. The teams were allowed to
race in both heat races and they had a Dash for Cash. Brad Dorsey won the first
heat ahead of Nelson and Thomas. Thomas turned the tables on Nelson in heat 2
with Ryan Petersen third. Charlie Mitchell beat Flagstaff's Kathy Menchaca and
Petersen in the dash. Chris Poeling and Eric Armenta both scratched from
the main event. Nelson was the feature winner over Thomas, Mitchell, Petersen,
Dorsey, Menchaca and Brandon Warren. Thomas holds a 28 point lead on Dorsey.
Because his home track raced on Friday, New Mexico resident Thomas from Quemado
towed to Hollywood Hills to race in the street stock class on Saturday night,
but broke in the heat race action.
