Pueblo San Felipe NM...August 20...Former WoO racer Johnny Herrera drove
to wins in both his heat and the feature as the NMMRA wingless sprint cars raced
at Hollywood Hills Speedway on Saturday night. Heat winner Bo Baker from Grants
chased Herrera to the win ahead of Kelly Dennison and Jason Tanner. IMCA Stock
car graduate Andy Hockenhull from Aztec NM won the dirt late model feature ahead
of double division racer Butch Reid Sr and Ron Frazier. Reid Sr did capture the
dirt modified main event in front of Ford devotee Bo Martinez and Russell
Harvey. Thomas Hayes ran second in his heat and won the hobby stock feature in
front of heat winner Phil York and Steve Bonesteel.
The wingless sprint cars
appeared with 17 cars on the clay half-mile and Jeff Brumfield Jr won the
opening heat race over Russell Gossett and Paul Whitehead, who was in the James
Mosher car. Kristi Smith blew an engine on the last lap and scratched from the
feature. Baker won heat 2 over James High and Larry Stoerkel. Herrera won heat 3
over Dennison and Tanner. In the 16 car feature, it was Herrera finishing off
his perfect night ahead of Baker, Dennison, Tanner, Jody Williams, Tom Ball,
2004 champion Jon Taylor, Steve Copeland, Ted McAdams and High. There were 10
dirt late models, but Monte Neff broke in practice. Ron Frazier won the first
heat race ahead of Reid Sr and Hockenhull. Steve Suber beat Steve Conrad Jr and
Richard Besaw in heat 2. Conrad Jr joined M Neff as a feature scratch.
Hockenhull has been impressive in his rookie year as he has raced with several
groups and he won the feature action ahead of Reid Sr, Frazier, Eloy Romero,
Besaw, Curt Neff and Suber. Marc Herrera crashed hard into the turn 1 fence, but
was unhurt.
There were 11 dirt modifieds,
but top runner Richard Johnson dropped a drive line in his heat and jumped into
the Frazier car for the main event. Troy Treharn heat 1 over Russell Harvey and
young Colt Treharn. Reid Sr had a perfect night with his dirt modified as he won
heat 2 over Rick Boelter and Frazier. Reid Sr was the feature winner ahead of
Martinez, Harvey, Ralph Dutcher, Johnson, Steve DeBerry, C Treharn and T Treharn.
There were 12 hobby stocks, but Paul Gindlesperger was a feature scratch. York
beat Hayes and Mike Mendoza in heat 1 and Randall Trujillo was chased to his
heat 2 win by Bonesteel and double division C Neff. Hayes won the feature race
ahead of York, Bonesteel, C Neff, Mendoza, Glenn Jaramillo, Brian Haworth and
Mike Dempsey.
The
Indian council was scheduled to release a 2005 schedule for the track on Monday,
August 22.
