Ventura, CA..June 18..Making his first appearance with the VRA Senior
unwinged 360 sprint cars, Richard McCormick drove to wins in both his heat race
and the 20 lap feature Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. He battled from 7th
starting for the feature win and point runnerup Ron Bach came all the way from
14th to finish second ahead of Steve Stasa. With point leader Wiley Miller
settling for a 10th, Bach closed to within 145 points of the point lead. Randy
McGraw won the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature as he came out on top for the second
time in four 2005 starts. Point leader Donald Houghton came from 8th to finish
second behind McGraw, who statted fifth. James Stowe ran third. Only 7 cars
appeared in the VRA Modifieds and point leader Tom Morley won for the fourth
time in six races. Point runnerup David Lidren ran second after starting on the
pole. Tom Morley came from the outside front row to win. Andrew Greiman made it
three wins in six races for the pony stocks as he won the 20 lapper over
defending champion Mike Frazier. They had both started in row 3 and Greiman's
point lead is just 65 tallies over Frazier. Tom Fish ran third from third
starting. Brian Saxton continued his domination of the VRA Pro Dwarf Cars as he
won his heat race and then captured his fourth main event in six races. Marc
Lippert was second ahead of Chris Taylor and John Lynch. The battle for the VRA
Senior Dwarf Car title continues to be a two car duel. Mike Sweeney won the
feature for the third time in six races and holds an 80 point lead over Ed
Niedzwiecki, who finished second.
The senior sprint cars split 22 cars into three heat races. Southern California
late model legend Oren Prosser Sr won heat 1 from the outside front row as pole
starter Tim Moon ran second. Tom Harper came from 4th to win heat 2 over front
row starters Jim Porter and Dave Marini. McCormick lined up fourth in heat 3 and
won with pole starter Bruce Douglas second ahead of Stasa. Marini and Bob
Alderman shared the front row for the 20 lap feature with Douglas and Porter in
row 2. McCormick won from 7th and Bach charged from 14th to finish second. Ninth
starter Stasa ran third ahead of Moon, Marini, Sparky Edmonston, Danny Weaver,
Harper and John Richards. W Miller and Jim Stutzman were the final lead lap
cars.
The IMCA Modifieds split 13 cars into a pair of heat races. Brad Prows won heat
1 over Bill Waltman and it was Houghton beating McGraw in heat 2. Randy Gens and
Johnny Lathrop shared the front row for the main event, but Lathrop was out of
the race after just 3 laps. Steve Smith joined him on the sidelines on lap 6 and
10 of the 13 starters finished. McGraw won from fifth and 8th starter Houghton
ran second. Stowe came from 10th to finish third and sixth row starter Jack
Parker was fourth ahead of Prows and Will Smith. W Smith was one lap down ahead
of Ed Cutler and Rich Wolfe. Houghton's point lead is 9 over W Smith and 24 in
front of Prows. Lidren beat Tom Morley in the VRA Modified heat race and they
shared the front row for the feature. Tom Morley won the 20 lapper ahead of
Lidren and Jammy Earnest, the final lead lap car. Trenton Morley joined the
action and finished two laps down in fourth.Third ranked Marty McLaughlin was
out on lap 2. Tom Morley is 100 points ahead of Lidren and M McLaughlin is now
195 back.
There were 14 pony stocks and 13 of them started the feature action. Greiman had
a perfect night as he won heat 1 from fourth over Fish and Joel Chavez. Frazier
won heat 2 from third ahead of outside front row starter Jim Evans and Jack
Hoyt. Evans was the first car to drop out of the 20 lapper as Greiman won from
sixth and fifth starter Frazier ran second. Fish started and finished third and
outside front row starter Hoyt ran fourth ahead of Joe Romance, Brad Long and
Chavez, the final lead lap finisher. With his 13th place run, Evans fell 300
points behind the point leader. There were 13 Pro Dwarfs and Jeff Fillingame was
the only feature scratch. Saxton won heat one from sixth and fellow third row
starter Lynch ran second. Marc Lippert outdueled Chuck Lippert for the heat 2
win after they had started fourth and fifth. Saxton then added the feature win
from 7th starting and fourth starter M Lippert ran second. Chris Taylor started
and finished in third ahead of Lynch, C Lippert and Thomas Velasquez, the final
lead lap car. Chad Kincaid was 7th ahead of James Johnson. The Senior Dwarfs
split 10 cars into two heat races. James Soltis won the first over Sweeney.
Niedzwiecki won heat 2 over Jerry Doolittle. Sweeney drove his M&M to a
feature win from sixth as fifth starter Niedzwiecki ran second ahead of Soltis,
Steve Denham, Doolittle and Jon Prechtl, the final lead lap car.
Ventura Raceway is running vintage motorcycles on June 25.
