Ventura, CA..May 14..In a stirring duel with point leader Chris Wakim,
Luis Espinoza scored his second $1000 VRA unwinged 360 sprint car win at Ventura
Raceway Saturday night. Espinoza started 4th and Wakim lined up 3rd. Wakim
finished second ahead of sixth starter Steve Conrad and 11th starting Kevin
Kierce. Wakim's finish gained him the point lead as incoming point leader Blake
Miller finished last in the 21 car feature. Senior Sprint point leaders Wiley
Miller and Ron Bach finished 1-2 in their main event ahead of suddenly
consistent Bob Alderman. W Miller holds a 755 point lead over Bach as he
attempts to defend his 2004 championship. Tom Morley made it three wins in five
races for the VRA Modifieds as he won the 20 lapper from third starting ahead of
pole starter Austin Rodarte. Dave Lidren came from 8th to finish third. Morley's
point lead is 95 over Lidren and 120 over sixth place finisher Marty McLaughlin.
Andrew Greiman got his second straight 20 lap pony stock win and that combined
with a lap 9 exit for 2004 champion Mike Frazier elevated Greiman into the
season point lead. Greiman came from 5th and third starting Randy Miller ran
second ahead of 4th starter David Peterson. Greiman is 90 points up on Frazier
and 140 ahead of R Miller.
The VRA wingless
sprint cars attracted a 22 car turnout so everyone was qualified into the A
Main. Bill Camarillo won the first heat over Espinoza and John Nock. Conrad won
heat 2 ahead of IMCA Modified graduate Wes Richardson and Ron Wade. Wakim
outraced Victor Davis and Jeremy Ellertson in heat 3. Oren Prosser Jr was a
feature scratch to leave a 21 car main event. Davis and Richardson shared the
front row ahead of Espinoza and Wakim with Camarillo and Conrad in row 3. B
Miller started 10th, but was an early dropout along with Davis. Greg Taylor also
struggled with a sixth in his heat and a 19th place feature finish. Espinoza
outdueled Wakim for the feature win with Conrad third ahead of Kierce,
Richardson, another rookie Derek Buckley, Nock and Tom Hendricks. Buckley came
from 15th to finish sixth. Former dwarf car star Angel Figueroa was 9th ahead of
Wade. Rob Kershaw fell in the point standings when he elected to race the Ford
Focus Midget event at Bakersfield, where he won. B Miller is 65 points back of
Wakim. Kierce is another 595 points back in third and Espinoza climbed around
Kershaw into 4th.
There were 19
Senior Sprints, but Oren Prosser Sr's night was over when the team's car broke
in the other division. Danny Miller beat W Miller in heat 1 and Tom Harper won
heat 2 over Jim Porter. Bach outraced Alderman and Tim Moon in heat 3. W Miller
and Bach shared the front row for the feature and finished in that order with
6th starter Alderman third ahead of D Miller, Steve Stasa, Harper, Dave Marini,
Guy Woodward, Grady Winkler and Ron Butler. Alderman's hot streak has elevated
him to third in points ahead of Marini and Moon.
There were 8 VRA
Modifieds, but Lance McLaughlin was a feature scratch after breaking on lap 1 of
the heat race. Lidren missed the heat race when rookie Rodarte won ahead of
Morley and M McLaughlin. Morley won the 20 lap feature from third as pole
starter Rodarte held off the challenge of 8th starter Lidren for second. Tom
Stephens Jr was fourth over Jammy Earnest. M McLaughlin fell out on lap 12.
The 13 pony stocks were split into a pair of heat races and Frazier won the
first from 4th ahead of R Miller and Jon Everhart. Greiman came from third to
win heat 2 over Tom Fish and former street stock star Greg Raap. Everhart was
scheduled to start on the pole in the 20 lap feature, but he scratched and fifth
starter Greiman won ahead of R Miller, Peterson, Paul Johnson, Jim Evans, Jack
Hoyt, Raap and Joe Romance. Fish were out on lap 4 and Frazier's race ended on
lap 9. Peterson is just 15 points back of third ranked R Miller.
The VRA unwinged 360
sprint cars and pony stocks return on May 21 when they will be joined by the
IMCA Modifieds and VRA dwarf cars. The track is dark on Memorial Day weekend.
