Ukiah, CA...May 14..Third fast qualifier Brian McClish from Santa Rosa
won the dash and time shortened 51 lap feature as the CASA wingless sprint cars
staged their first ever Ukiah Speedway event on Saturday night. The group is
scheduled for monthly visits to the ¼ mile paved oval, but their April date was
rained out and this was just the second 2005 for the club not to be rained out.
They brought a 13 car field and 2004 champion Nick Rescino Jr from San Francisco
was second in the feature after earlier setting quick time. The main event was
scheduled for 100 laps, but a yellow flag plagued night for all five divisions
saw just 51 laps completed before the 11 o'clock curfew shut down the action.
Veteran racer Glenn Hopper won the fast heat and placed third in the main event.
Veteran modified racer Norm Boucher from Cloverdale was impressive in his first
2005 appearance as he set fast time, won the dash, heat and feature. Opening
night winner Brad Villeggiante ran second ahead of Corey James. Steve McLean
fended off the challenges of fast timer Loren Powers Sr to win the bomber
feature with female star Wendy Pierce in third. Second quick Shelby Helm was
third in the dash, second in the fast heat and then won the pure stock main
event ahead of Jim Wade and slow heat winner David Barnes. Kevin Barba made his
first mini stock appearance of 2005 and dominated that action with a clean
sweep. He was 1.5 seconds quicker than the second fastest car and easily won the
dash, heat and feature. Tom Burger ran second.
An 11 feature
winner in his 2004 championship season and winner of the only previously
completed CASA race in 2005, Rescino paced time trials with a 12.091 clocking.
The team cars of Trevor Cummins and McClish were next as Cummins ran a 12.114
and McClish a 12.197. Brad Bumgarner clicked off a 12.275 and rookie Nick Green
ranked fifth with his 12.320 McClish won the dash ahead of Bumgarner and
Rescino. Hopper stayed out front in the fast heat with Bumgarner second ahead
of Green and Rescino. Tony Iacobetti won the slow heat in front of Ivan Worden
and Joe Hauck. Four caution flags limited the teams to 51 laps in the scheduled
100 lap feature and it was McClish getting the win ahead of Rescino, Hopper,
Green, Iacobetti, Cummins, rookie female outlaw kart graduate Jessica Helberg,
Earl Stanton and Hauck.
Boucher was quickest of
the 10 modifieds with a 13.400 lap as Villeggiante ran a 13.435. That easily
paced the 13.581 of young rookie Noel McCormack. Darrin Knight was fourth quick
at 13.621 and James ran a 13.653. Boucher won the dash from last starting as
Knight ran second ahead of McCormack. Knight's night ended with a hard crash in
the lone heat race. Boucher put on another passing clinic as he drove through
the the pack to win the heat race over Dustin DeRosier, James and Villeggiante.
Boucher finished off his perfect night with a main event win over Villeggiante,
James, rookie Scott Sabol, Paul Pedroncelli, Steve Taylor, McCormack and
DeRosier. Boucher said that his schedule would not allow him to return until
June 18.
The bombers had the largest turnout
with 18 cars and 2004 pure stock champion Powers continued his domination of the
time trial runs with a 14.577 lap. Jerry Donahoo was second fast at 14.819, Ron
Duke Sr ran a 14.877 and Andy Vanderveer was the final 14 second car at 14.982.
Vanderveer won the dash from the pole over Duke Sr and Powers. Feature winner S
McLean won the fast heat ahead of Jason Mavrakis, Duke Sr and Powers. Newcomer
Trent Campbell from Laytonville won the slow heat in front of Corey Carlson and
Wendy Hinton. All 18 cars were able to start the main event and S McLean fended
off a strong challenge from Powers for that win. Pierce ran third ahead of J
Mavrakis, Duke Sr, Bill Shura, Tom Luchese, Vanderveer and James Sturges Sr.
Opening night winner
Jared Martin, an outlaw kart graduate, dominated the early night action for the
pure stocks. He was quickest of the 10 entries at 15.612 that just nipped the
15.650 of Helm. Jimmy Sturges Jr ranked third at 15.876 and rookie A J Randall
was a distant fourth at 16.202. Sturges Jr won the dash over Martin and Helm.
Martin then captured the fast heat in front of Helm and Wade. Barnes captured
the slow heat with Doug Moll second. Newcomer Carl Tuliback was a feature
scratch. Martin's big night ended with a 9th place finish as Helm won the
feature ahead of Wade, Barnes, Moll, Mikey Lovell, Jason McLean and Randall.
There were 3
mini stocks and Barba was easily the quickest with his 14.824 lap. Kenneth
Golding ran 16.262 and Burger a 16.740. Barba won dash over Golding, then beat
Burger and Golding in both the heat race and feature.
