Hanford, CA....April 9.......Only racing a part time schedule in 2005,
Ronnie Day from Salinas raced to a $1500 win in the 30 lap Rebel Cup winged 360
sprint car feature Saturday night at Kings Speedway. Day's car is a Maxim crew
chiefed by Preston Cross and is a team car to World of Outlaws regular Jason
Meyers, sponsored by Elite Landscaping. Steve Kent joined the action to get laps
on the track prior to the Golden State Challenge Series ran on April 16 and he
ran a $1000 second ahead of previous week winner Craig Stidham, who won $650.
The rainout of the SCRA event nearby Tulare bolstered the car count in the
Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars and Hanford's own 17 year old Chad Boespflug won
that 25 lap feature ahead of fast timer Peter Murphy and Jonathan Logan.
Boespflug had won the last SCRA race in Chowchilla. Making just his third start
with his new Jet Mod, David Addamo from Santa Maria got his first IMCA Modified
feature win worth $400. Addamo was the 2004 Factory Stock champion at Santa
Maria Speedway and did double duty in the street stocks last year after earlier
racing Bandit sprint cars. A rainout in Merced grew the modified car count to 22
cars and Mark Hamblin ran second ahead of Steve Smothermon. Coalinga's Preston
Martin won the Hot Stock feature ahead of fellow townsman Michael Redding.
Garrett Ishii
was quickest of the ten Rebel Cup winged sprint cars with a 13.725 lap. Kent ran
a 13.745 and Andy Ferris was the final 13 second car at 13.935. Day won the
first heat race ahead of Jeff Delte and Ferris. Ishii ran fifth to fall out of
the feature inversion. Stidham captured heat 2 ahead of Kent and Tommy Tarlton.
The feature inversion came up a six and Ishii flipped while lining up for the 30
lap main event. Day raced to the win with Stidham holding off the challenges of
Kent for much of the race. Kent, who is kept busy crew chiefing the efforts of
two sons at Plaza Park Raceway on Friday nights, finally got around Stidham for
second and closed on Day as the laps ran down. Stidham ran third ahead of Andy
Gregg, Delte and Tarlton. Mark Barroso and Ferris were also feature dropouts.
Driving the unwinged team
car to Tarlton, Australia's Murphy set quick time for the 23 Bandits at 15.880.
Danny Sheridan was the only car in the 15's at 15.978 and Boespflug was a
distant third at 16.275. A J Burgin ranked fourth ahead of Evan Suggs. 2004
Bandit champion Davey Pombo Jr won heat 1 ahead of Logan, Rusty Carlile and
Murphy. Aaron Chaney captured heat 2 with Steve Thomas second ahead of Sheridan
and Albert Pombo. Former dirt late model racer Rick Gifford won heat 3 in front
of Boespflug and Greg Porte. Eric Severson broke in hot laps, Chris D'Arcy
crashed in time trials and they were joined as feature scratches by Jerry Wise
Jr, Ray Knight and Charles Turner. That left 18 starters for the feature run and
Boespflug was the winner ahead of Murphy, Logan, Sheridan, Porte, Suggs, Chaney,
Burgin, Pombo Jr and Jimmy Reeves.
The combination of the
Merced rainout and an open date on Bakersfield's schedule grew the IMCA Modified
count to 22 cars. After winning the Hot Stock feature last week, Coalinga's Ron
D'Artenay Jr jumped into the car of 2004 track champion Bryan Burnes to make his
IMCA Modified debut. Smothermon won heat 1 ahead of the son-father duo of Alex
Stanford and Jack Stanford. Buck Cox ran fourth. Besides his racing, Addamo is
playing a key role in the management of Santa Maria Speedway in 2005 and is
excited to see that track get an IMCA sanction. He won heat 2 in front of Todd
Hermosillo and Hamblin with Merced star Ramie Stone in fourth. Mike Villaneuva
won heat 3 ahead of Sparks NV long tow Bill Smith III and Joe Chapman as opening
night winner Claudine Contente ran fourth. Mike Gillard from Merced was the only
feature scratch and Addamo outdueled Hamblin for that win. Car builder
Smothermon was third ahead of Cox, Bakersfield's Brad Pounds, Aaron Barnell, C
Contente, Merced champion Bob Williamson Sr, Troy Stone and Villaneueva.
D'Artenay ran 13th ahead of Garrett Steitz.
There were only six Hot
Stocks and top runner J T Contente was last in the feature after missing the
heat action. Redding beat Martin in the heat race, but it was Martin on top in
the feature with Redding second ahead of Luis Avila, enduro racer Mark Courtney
and James Brown.
On April 16, the Golden
State Challenge Series for winged 410 sprint cars comes to town and they will be
joined by the IMCA Modifieds. Kings Speedway regular Lawrence Edlund posted his
first ever Golden State Series feature win on Saturday night at Antioch Speedway
in the Davey Key car.
