Hanford, CA..Oct 22...Winning
for the 9th time at the track in 2004 despite not racing the entire
schedule, Danny Sheridan pocketed $500 for his Kings Clash victory
in the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars as the Dirt Track Nationals
weekend opened Friday night. Sheridan also captured his heat race
with a last turn move around Peter Murphy in his Warren Dorathy
owned mount and he was a wire to wire winner in the 10 lap Kings
Clash to pocket the five $100 bills posted by Western Speed and Fuel
owner Gary Olson. Murphy ran second in the Clash ahead of Rick
Williams and Bandit champion Davey Pombo Jr. Heat wins were posted
by Danny Olmstead, Sheridan, Ventura regular Chris Wakim and
Williams in a 32 car turnout and a pill draw will determine the
inversion factor for the $3000 to win, 30 lapper on Saturday night.
The Kings Clash win for the super street stocks went to Santa Maria
open comp winner Tim Randolph as led all 10 laps after earlier
winning his heat race. That victory also earned him $500 from Olson.
Everyone else in the Clash earned $50, but Darrell Hughes was
penalized from his 2nd place finish for spinning Petaluma champion
Woody Woodward on the final lap. That gave second to Preston Martin
ahead of Hanford champion Ron D'Artenay Jr. The four division show
attracted over 150 cars and the massive pit area accommodated them
despite having large flooded areas from the midweek rains.
The 32 Bandit Sprint Cars were divided into four ten lap qualifying
heat races and the top four from each moved into Saturday night's A
Main. First and Second both advanced to the 10 lap Kings Clash race.
Outside front row starter Olmstead was a wire to wire winner in heat
1 over Jimmy Crawford in the Twister Chassis house car. Aaron Chaney
came from last to finish third over Josh Ford. Sheridan had taken
the lead from Jim Richardson on lap 2 in heat 2 despite starting
7th, but lost the lead to Murphy on lap 6. Sheridan came back with
his last turn pass to gain the head win with Murphy second ahead of
Richardson and 8th starting Richard Harvey Jr. Heat three was
dominated by outside front row starter Chris Wakim as Bandit
champion Pombo Jr came from fifth. Pombo rained second on lap 5 and
finished third with Santa Maria's Gary Rayburn Jr third over
teenaged Garrett Hansen. Pole starter Williams won heat 4 and Chris
D'Arcy gained second when race long second Daniel Hood was spun by a
lapped car on the final round. Jimmy Reeves came from 7th to run
third over Jonathan Logan. The draw for the starting order in the
Kings Clash put Pombo Jr and Sheridan on the front row ahead of
Olmstead, Murphy, D'Arcy, Williams, Crawford and Wakim. Sheridan and
Murphy were 1-2 on the first lap and they stayed there for all ten
laps. Williams raced into third on lap 2 and ran there with Pombo
fourth over Crawford and Olmstead.
The 33 super street stocks also used the four heat format so the top
four in each moved into Saturday night's $1500 to win 30 lapper. The
Kings Clash had the heat winners and the sixth place cars. Track
champion D'Artenay started fourth in heat 1, but had the lead on the
first lap. He lost the top spot to Gary Dutton in the Bill Little
car on lap 2, but regained it on lap 4. D'Artenay won with Dutton
second ahead of pole starter Keith Heaslet and Zach Forster. Pole
starter Randolph dominated heat 2 and Watsonville champion Dennis
Pelphrey came from sixth to run second over Steve Cargill and
Charlie Dowdy. Dowdy won a side by side duel with Chowchilla
champion Chris Messmer for that final transfer. Joey Silva was a
wire to wire winner from outside front row in heat 3 and Johnny
Cardoza took second from Auburn's Wayne Trimble on lap 4. Petaluma
star Mikol Westling ran third and a late race black flag for
spinning Trimble cost Billy Simkins the last transfer with
Bakersfield champion Robby Sawyer gaining that fourth spot. Third
starter Preston Martin, a Hanford rookie, took the lead from Rich
Denman on the opening lap of heat 4, but had to force Denman high
off the track late in the race to gain the win as Denman had used a
slide job to gain the top spot. Denman finished second and
Petaluma's Mitch Machado nursed a failing engine over the final two
laps to gain third ahead of Santa Maria champion Kenny Kirkpatrick.
This Kings Clash started a car short as Jeremiah VanScoy had
trailered home before the pill draw put the sixth place cars in.
Trimble and Randolph had the front row ahead of Silva and Hughes.
Randolph took a quick lead over Trimble with Hughes into third.
Silva was out on lap 2 and Martin made contact with fellow Coalinga
resident D'Artenay in his pass for fifth on lap 4. Trimble fell back
on lap 5 as Hughes, Woodward and Martin moved into the 2-3-4 slots.
Woodward grabbed second from Hughes on lap 6 and Randolph had a
large lead wiped out when D'Artenay spun with a flat tire for a lap
8 caution. Randolph won easily and Hughes turned Woodward on the
last lap to shuffle the standings. Martin gained second over
D'Artenay and Woodward.
