Watsonville, CA..Oct
16..A veteran of 33 seasons behind the wheel, Jim Perry Jr took
the lead from NCMA star David Goodwill on lap 6 and paced the final
25 laps as he scored a $2000, 30 lap feature win as the Indian
Summer Series for the wingless spec sprints concluded on Saturday
night at Watsonville Speedway. Goodwill stayed in second after
losing the lead to Perry and he won $1000 for that place. Rick
Martin joined the action on Saturday and came from 11th starting to
third, but was penalized back to sixth place, the last car running,
for failing to report to the post race tech area. That allowed
Friday night dash winner Bob Newberry to move into the $750 third
ahead of Scott Merrell, who won $500. When Antioch Speedway
shortened their participation in the series to just a single night
$500 to win show, the series point fund ended, but five huge
trophies were awarded to the teams with the best combined records
between the two shows. Newberry earned the series championship award
ahead of Billy Macedo, Merrell, Goodwill and Perry Jr. Rain began to
fall in the pit area shortly after the Saturday night racing was
completed.
The addition of Martin gave an 11 car grid for the 30 lap feature.
The track announced that they want to add the wingless spec sprints
as a regular Friday night division in 2005. By winning the Friday
night dash, Newberry had earned the pole for the 30 lapper and he
led the first lap over Goodwill and Perry. Steve Stein spun on lap
2, but continued without a caution. Goodwill took the lead from
Antioch champion Newberry on lap 3 and Perry was second a lap later.
Bobby Nichols spun for a lap 5 yellow and Perry made a high groove
move around Goodwill on the back stretch to take the lead on lap 6.
Newberry settled into third over Sal Mannina and Joey Santos.
Nichols race ended as he caused a second yellow flag on lap 9 and
Martin raced into fifth on the restart. Martin took fourth from Sal
Mannina on lap 10 and had some contact with Newberry in their duel
for third on lap 14. Steve Mannina pitted and Martin traded third
with Newberry several times before claiming the spot for good on lap
18. Perry Jr had built a ¼ lap lead on Goodwill. Martin pulled up
on second place Goodwill and an overheated Stein fell out. Fifth
place Sal Mannina broke for a lap 20 yellow flag. The restart saw
major action as Santos made hard contact with the front wall and
Macedo broke a wheel. Steve Mannina returned for the restart and
Perry Jr paced those final ten rounds ahead of Goodwill and Martin.
Martin's post race miscue cost him three spots and $400 as Newberry
advanced to third over Merrell and Steve Mannina. Macedo's second
place run at Antioch earned him second overall in the series as
Goodwill was 10th at Antioch and Perry Jr 14th.
