Pueblo San Felipe,
NM..Oct 9...Having recently joined many time SCOA winged 410 sprint
car champion Rickey Hood as a teammate on the team owned by his
father, Johnny Herrera completely dominated Saturday night's 30 lap
feature at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Herrera had a perfect night as
he won heat 1 and then captured the dash to earn the pole position
for the 30 lapper. He was never challenged as he drove his Avenger
Chassis to a half-lap lead for much of the race. He had placed
second to Hood on Friday night and got the $2750 win on Saturday
night ahead of Hood, Colorado's Rich Bubak and Patrick Bourke. After
settling for second behind female ace Christy Georges on Friday
night, Lorne Wofford added another $1000 Hollywood Hills win to his
resume as he wheeled his GRT dirt modified to the checkered flag in
front of Friday night third place finisher Scott Logston and B Main
winner Jeff Davis, a regular at Aztec Speedway. After dropping out
of his heat race, Washington's Gary Taylor won the B Main to earn
his A Main starting slot with the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars, then
repeated his drive through the pack to score his second $950 win of
the weekend. Paul Whitehead ran second ahead of Tim West and female
star Kristy Smith. Jon Taylor started the main event only needing to
finish right behind Tom Ball to secure the NMMRA season title and he
did just that as he ran 11th and Ball was 10th.
The winged 410 sprint cars were again divided into three heat races
and Herrera won the first over Jeff Slinkard and Bourke. Kansas star
Jason Martin won heat 2 over Dion Hindi and Albuquerque's Bud
Goodwin. Josh Grady from Farmington NM won heat 3 over Rich Bubak
and double division racer Gary Taylor. Herrera earned the pole for
the 30 lap feature with his dash win over Martin, Bubak, Slinkard,
Grady and Bourke. John Carney Jr caught fire during the main event,
but the racing was all Herrera as he won ahead of Hood, Bubak,
Bourke, Slinkard and G Taylor.
A smaller field of dirt modifieds than the previous night ran in
four heat races. Kyle Odom got his second heat win of the weekend in
heat 1 over Toby Herring and Kenny Wheeler. Sherman Barnett won heat
2 over Barnett's Harley Davidson Dirt Modified regional rookie of
the year Jay Rosales from Las Cruces and Brandon Carley. Butch Reid
Sr won heat 3 over Jimmy Ray and Friday night feature winner Christy
Georges. Kevin Brown from Aztec Speedway won heat 4 over Hollywood
Hills champion Bumper Jones and Royal Jones, his father. Jeff Davis
won the B Main over Wofford, Eddie Farley, Logston and Johnny Scott.
The top 3 finishers in the A Main all came through the B Main action
as Wofford won from 14th starting ahead of 16th starter Logston and
13th starting Davis. Carley ran fourth over B Jones, Curt Barnett, J
Scott, R Jones, Albuquerque's Richard Johnson and Ron Frazier Jr.
Ray, Rosales and Reid Sr all dueled up front, but both Ray and
Rosales broke and Reid had to pit with a flat tire.
The unwinged sprint car action featured the battle for the NMMRA
season championship. Laboe Labrado, Rick Chatterton and Leith
Labrado ran 1-2-3 in heat 1. They are all El Paso area racers who
normally race 305 winged sprints. Another member of their group, 15
year old Brandon Schure was 4th in that heat. David Burns got his
second heat win of the weekend in heat 2 over Kelly Seals and
Whitehead. Tim West beat Nick Rael and Jody Williams in heat 3 and
Bo Baker won heat 4 over Bobby Seals and J Taylor. G Taylor and Ball
had both dropped out of their heat races and that forced them into
the B Main where they ran 1-2. J C Powell Jr was third ahead of
Kelly Denison, Kevin Faber, Laboe Labrado, Ted McAdams and
Chatterton. Burns led the first 3 laps of the 25 lap A Main before
Whitehead took over. Whitehead led until lap 18 when 18th starter G
Taylor took command and collected his second win of the weekend.
Whitehead did nose back in front on lap 19, but the rim riding G
Taylor commanded the final 6 laps of the race. Whitehead finished
2nd ahead of West, female racer Smith, Jeff Brumfield Jr, Rael, El
Paso's Don Grable, Jimmy Scott and J C Powell Jr. J Taylor ran 11th
and was crowned NMMRA champion. The grandson of the great Buddy
Taylor was followed in the point standings by 2002 champion Ball,
2003 titlest Baker, Denison and rookie of the year Williams. Rael
was next ahead of Brumfield Jr, Bobby Seals, Smith and Larry
Stoerkel. Baker won the special $10,000 point fund that Hollywood
Hills had for all of it's wingless shows in 2004.
