Pueblo San Felipe,
NM...Oct 8...Many time SCOA winged 410 sprint car champion Rickey
Hood outdueled new teammate Johnny Herrera to score a $2750 win as
the SCOA winged 410 sprint cars opened a two night stand at
Hollywood Hills Speedway on Friday night. Dion Hindi had dominated
the race, but stayed on the track for a couple slow laps after he
broke and caused serious problems for several competitors. The race
ended with a checkered yellow combination and Hood got the win ahead
of Herrera, John Stroud, Scott Box and John Carney Jr. The dirt
modified $1000 win went to El Paso TX female star Christy Georges as
she drove her Harris chassis to a narrow win over race long rival
Lorne Wofford from Alamogordo, who wheels a GRT. B Main winner Scott
Logston worked his way through the pack to run third over Sherman
Barnett and Curt Barnett as the Barnett's Harley Davidson team put
three cars in the top five. Running an extreme high line after
starting deep in the pack, Washington's Gary Taylor, 23 years old,
wheeled the Harry Conklin car to a $950 win in the unwinged NMMRA
sprint car action. Santa Fe's own Jimmy Scott ran second while Bo
Baker used a third place run to wrap up the championship share of
Hollywood Hills own $10,000 point fund for the unwinged sprint cars.
The first night action drew 26 winged sprint cars, 38 dirt modifieds
and 28 unwinged sprint cars.
The SCOA winged sprint cars divided their field into three heat
races. Albuquerque's own Scott Box won heat 1 over Hindi and Jeff
Slinkard. El Paso TX charger John Carney Jr got the heat 2 win over
Dodge powered Brian O'Donnell and Washington's versatile G Taylor.
Colorado's Rich Bubak won heat 3 over Hood and Stroud. The dash sets
the lineup for the front three rows in their feature action and
Hindi posted the dash win over Stroud, Hood, Box, Carney and Bubak.
Mike Grady from Farmington NM got into the fence hard in the heat
race action. Hindi took a quick lead in the feature with Hood,
Stroud, Herrera and Box all dueling for the second place spot. At
the halfway mark, Arizona's Steve Martin flipped several times to
destroy his car, but he escaped unhurt. James High also rolled in
turn 1 during the event. Hindi appeared to have the race in hand
when he slowed dramatically. Hindi stayed on the track and produced
problems for drivers like Colorado's Patrick Bourke and G Taylor.
The race ended with a checkered yellow combination and Hood got the
win over Herrera, Stroud, Box and Carney.
With their large turnout, the dirt modifieds split 38 cars into five
heats and a B Main to determine an A Main lineup. Track point leader
Bumper Jones won heat 1 over Albuquerque's David Sheffield and Aztec
racer Kevin Brown. Santa Fe's own Kyle Odom got his first heat win
of the year in heat 2 over S Barnett and Troy Treharn. Georges
previewed her feature success with a win in heat 3 over teammate C
Barnett and Scott Lynch. Ron Frazier Jr was able to concentrate on
just a single car this week and he won heat 4 over Jeff Davis and
Frank Powell Sr. Wofford outraced 14 year old Stormy Scott and J R
Fanelli in heat 5. The B Main had heavy hitters in the top five
slots as Logston won over Jimmy Ray, Johnny Scott, Royal Jones and
Butch Reid Sr. Georges and Wofford put on a show as they traded the
lead numerous times over the final 10 laps before Georges got the
$1000 win. Wofford ran second over Logston, 69 year old S Barnett, C
Barnett, Brandon Carley, B Jones, J Scott, Davis and Frazier Jr.
With several of the El Paso area winged 305 sprint cars taking their
wings off and joining the action, the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars had
28 cars to split into four heat races. Santa Fe's own David Burns
won heat 1 over Paul Whitehead and Steve Copeland. Another Santa Fe
resident Scott won heat 2 over Chris Faber and Cortez CO race
promoter Lonnie Oliver. Tim West beat Jody Williams in heat 3 and
Jon Taylor got the heat 4 win over Kelly Denison and Leighton
Crouch. Robert Jansson beat Ted McAdams, Oliver, Copeland and Rick
Chatterton in the B Main. The 30 lap A Main went red on lap 2 when J
C Powell Jr spun and rolled. He was able to restart. Scott led until
lap 20 when 16th starter G Taylor took command. G Taylor wheels a
2001 Eagle and he was chased across the finish line by Scott, Baker,
J Taylor, Denison, Williams, Nick Rael, C Faber, Kristy Smith and
Jeff Brumfield Jr. The combination of J Taylor's heat win and 4th
place finish combined with the engine woes of Tom Ball to give J
Taylor a two point lead going into the Saturday night season finale
for the traveling club.
