Unwinged 410 Sprint Cars, Dirt Late Models, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

Pueblo San Felipe, NM....Oct 2......Turning the tables on Friday night winner Charles Davis Jr, Damion Gardner from Concord CA drove the Madera CA based Chaffin mount back into the lead on lap 38 as he scored a $10,000 win in the 40 lap feature as the SCRA unwinged 410 sprint cars closed both their point season and the Non Winged World Championship Series Saturday night at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Both drivers had been seeded into Saturday night's dash by virtue of their 1-2 finish on Friday night. After Johnny Herrera led the first 9 laps, fourth starter Gardner gained the lead on lap 10. Davis came from fifth starting and he grabbed the top spot from Gardner on lap 24. Gardner stormed back to retake the lead just 3 rounds from the finish for the rich win. On Friday night, Davis Jr had passed Gardner three laps from the checkered flag for that win. Davis Jr ran second ahead of Herrera, SCRA champion Rickie Gaunt and Colorado's Rich Bubak. Gaunt was crowned as champion of the NWWC series with his fourth place run. After a third place run on Friday night, Curt Barnett from El Paso TX won the $450 dirt late model feature ahead of Butch Reid Sr and Friday night winner Eloy Romero. Albuquerque's Shaun Dutcher won the street stock feature worth $400 ahead of Santa Fe's own Joe Smithberger and Rick Boelter. Phil York won the hobby stock main event in front of Ronnie Leathem Jr and double division racer Boelter.

The top four from Friday night, Davis Jr, Gardner, Herrera and Alan Ballard were seeded into Saturday night's Dash to determine the front four rows for the 40 lapper without having to run time trials or heat races. New Mexico youngster Kelly Denison turned quick time for the 29 cars that turned in timed runs at 16.371. Steve Ostling had a 16.396, Gaunt a 16.490 and Bo Baker a 16.491. Colorado's Bubak was fifth and Oklahoma's Larry Neighbors ranked sixth ahead of Washington transplant Gary Taylor and Indiana's Tony Elliott. Despite the many flips on Friday night, Nick Rael was the only car not to return on Sautrday night. The four prequalified cars were joined by the top five from three heat races and five transfers from the B Main. Mike Spencer won the opening heat with G Taylor battling back from an early spin for second over Rick Ziehl. Ostling came from 8th to win heat 2 over Elliott and Bubak. Gaunt captured heat 3 ahead of Seth Wilson and Ronnie Clark. Herrera earned the pole position for the 40 lapper by winning the Dash fro Cash ahead of Ostling, Ballard, Gardner, Davis Jr, Gaunt, Dennison and Bo Baker. New Mexico's Dave Burns won the B Main over Lubbock TX invader Leighton Crouch, Jeff Brumfield Jr, Friday night flip victim Paul Whitehead and J C Powell Jr. Just missing the move up were Jody Williams and Ted McAdams. Top runners Jeremy Sherman and Tom Ball trailered before the B Main. The A Main saw three more drivers get upsidedown as Neighbors flipped for the second straight night. Fast timer Denison flipped and Wilson's car was destroyed in a hard flip. Herrera led 9 laps from the pole before Gardner nosed ahead for 14. Davis Jr then raced into the lead and appeared headed to a second win in two nights only to get repassed by Gardner just three laps from the finish. Davis Jr ran second ahead of Herrera, Gaunt, Bubak, Spencer, Baker, G Taylor, Ostling and Ballard. Elliott ran 11th and Yuma AZ charger Mike Martin was 12th.

The dirt late model field improved to 11 cars with Albuquerque's Richard Besaw debuting a beautiful new car and Tony Hill from Cortez CO racing with the class in his super street stock. The improved count allowed two heat races and Barnett won the first over Butch Reid Sr and Hill. Ron Frazier Jr outraced Monte Neff and Marc Herrera in heat 2. Barnett drove his Larry Shaw car to a feature win ahead of Reid Sr, Friday night winner Romero, Ralph Dutcher, Neff and Besaw. Steve Conrad Jr and Herrera got together coming off turn 2 and Herrera made heavy contact with the pit exit wall. Herrera had to be transported to the hospital for a checkup, but he did not have serious injuries. The third place duel between Neff and Dutcher found them both spinning to a stop just before the flag allowing Romero by for third. Dutcher salvaged fourth ahead of Neff. The street stocks split 16 cars into two heat races and Saturday arrival Danny Gross won the first heat over female racer Jennifer Zorn and Kenny Smith Jr. Jay Pape won heat 2 over Andy Tanner and Smithberger. Pape again had problems in the feature and Friday night winner Frazier Jr fell out as S Dutcher won ahead of Smithberger, Boelter, Ronnie Bell, Jeff Whyman and Henry Alvidres. Pape was 7th ahea dof Zorn and Smith Jr. The hobby stocks had another solid turnout of 27 cars and 26 survived to start their feature. Frazier Jr won heat 1 over John Cruickshank and Ray Munoz. York outraced Curt Neff and Boyd Ellis in heat 2 and it was Leathem Jr winning heat 3 over Dan Harmon and Glenn Jaramillo. The main had a scary moment as Sandy York caught fire and she raced a full lap with the flames shooting from the car before it was stopped. York won the feature race ahead of Leathem Jr, Boelter, Frazier Jr and Harmon.

October is a busy month for Hollywood Hills Speedway as the SCOA winged 410 sprint cars are joined by the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars and the Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modifieds on Oct 9-10.
