Pueblo San Felipe,
NM.....Oct 1.....Retaking the lead from Damion Gardner on lap 18,
Charles Davis Jr got his first SCRA unwinged 410 sprint car feature
win of 2004 as the club opened a two night stay at Hollywood Hills
Speedway on Friday night. Davis had earned a front row start in the
20 lapper by placing second behind teenager Alan Ballard in the
dash. Davis led the first 9 laps, then 4th starter Gardner took over
for 8 before Davis nosed back ahead for the final three rounds.
Gardner ran second ahead of former WoO regular Johnny Herrera and
Ballard. Those four drivers were seeded into the $10,000 to win
Saturday night show that also closed the 2004 NonWinged World
Championship Series. With his 6th place run, Rickie Gaunt wrapped up
the 2004 SCRA championship. Gaunt and Davis are teammates on the
Smiley Racing Team. Eloy Romero got his first $450 win of 2004 as he
captured the dirt late model feature over three division racer Ron
Frazier Jr and Curt Barnett. Barnett was able to join the action for
the two nights at Hollywood Hills when his dirt modified was
destroyed in a Thursday night crash at his home track in Las Cruces,
where he planned to chase a $10,000 win on the weekend. Frazier Jr
had a big night as collected the $400 street stock win over Joe
Smithberger and Shaun Dutcher. In the hobby stocks, the three heat
winners took the top three spots in their feature with Steve
Bonesteel beating Phil York and Dan Harmon.
The SCRA unwinged 410 sprint cars had a 34 car turnout with Gaunt
gaining quick time honors with a 15.718 lap. Ronnie Clark ran a
15.889 and Gardner ranked third at 16.016. Mike Spencer's 16.103
earned him fourth quick honors ahead of Steve Ostling, Ballard and
former Washington star Gary Taylor, now racing out of Denver CO with
the Conklin team. The top four finishers from each heat advanced
into the A Main where they were joined by six transfers from the B
Main. Indiana's Tony Elliott put the Ellis car in the winner's
circle for heat 1 over New Mexico's own Tim West and Ostling. Jeremy
Sherman from Arizona won heat 2 over Ballard and Herrera. New
Mexico's Paul Whitehead flipped in this event. Oklahoma's Larry
Neighbors won heat 3 over NMMRA point leader Tom Ball and Davis Jr.
New Mexico star Rick Ziehl outraced Jody Williams and Texan Leighton
Crouch in heat 4. The dash sets the grid for the first four rows in
the 22 car A Main grid and is reserved for the 8 fastest qualifiers
to transfer through the heat action. This event had a tough time
getting started, but 17 year old Ballard from Bakersfield CA
collected the win ahead of Davis Jr, Shon Deskins, Gardner, Clark
and Herrera. Ostling was a flip victim in the dash. Gaunt had
problems in his heat and had to run the B Main, starting on the
pole. Former dwarf car star Seth Wilson impressed with his B Main
win over G Taylor with Gaunt fading to a third ahead of Spencer,
Dave Burns, Bo Baker and Yuma Az long tow Mike Martin. Davis beat
Ballard on the initial green flag for the 20 lapper and paced 9 laps
before 4th starter Gardner put the Chaffin car in front. Davis was
able to battle back to retake the lead with three laps to run for
the win. Gardner ran second over Herrera and Ballard. Ostling
recovered from his flip to finish fifth ahead of Gaunt, G Taylor,
Clark, Wilson and Elliott. Mike Spencer rolled early in the race,
but continued and finished 14th. Neighbors flipped on the first lap,
West was the victim of a hard flip and Ziehl crashed hard into the
fence in turn 2 early in the action.
The late addition of Barnett gave the dirt late models a 9 car
turnout so they ran a single heat race with Butch Reid Sr getting
the win ahead of C Barnett, Ron Frazier Jr and Romero. Deral Meek
was a feature scratch and Albuquerque's Romero got his first win of
the year ahead of Frazier Jr, Barnett, Steve Conrad Jr, Ralph
Dutcher and Marc Herrrea. The street stocks split 15 cars into a
pair of heat races. Ronnie Bell beat James Tyrell and Kenny Smith Jr
in heat 1 and it was Jay Pape rebounding from his blown engine at
the last race to capture heat 2 over Santa Fe's Smithberger and Jeff
Whyman. Pape suffered two flat tires in the feature that placed him
last in the 14 car rundown. Frazier Jr got the win over Smithberger,
Shaun Dutcher, Bell, Whyman, Smith Jr, Jennifer Zorn and Henry
Alvidres. The hobby stocks fielded 26 entries and Phil York won heat
1 over Frazier Jr and Benny Chavez. S Bonesteel outdueled Boyd Ellis
and Staci March in heat 2 and it was Dan Harmon getting the heat 3
win over Ronnie Leathem and Glenn Jaramillo. S Bonesteel won the
feature race over York, Harmon, Leathem, Ronnie Bell and Bob Suber,
who was making his 2004 season debut.
