Hanford, CA..Sept
25..Series point leader Ronnie Day won his sixth Rebel winged 360
sprint car feature in 16 events Saturday night at Kings Speedway. He
holds an 82 point lead over Tim Worth with just an Oct 9th race
remaining on the 2004 schedule. Worth managed to climb into second
by wheeling a car without power steering to second place ahead of
Peter Murphy. Fast timer Garrett Ishii fell out of second with his
17th place run. For the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars, it was
another incredible effort for Danny Sheridan. He posted quick time
over a 27 car field, won his heat race and then captured the feature
race. The win was his 8th in 13 Bandit races in 2004 allowing him to
finish fourth in points despite missing five races on the 18 race
point schedule. Rookie Jimmy Reeves, a former IMCA Modified track
champion, ran a season best second ahead of Richard Harvey Jr and
double division Murphy. Davey Pombo Jr wrapped up the Bandit point
title with a 7th place run that left him 114 points up on Harvey.
Harvey moved into second on the final night as an 11th place run
dropped Scott Holloway to third, 7 points behind Harvey. Jumping
into his own car after the Large family car was badly damaged, Steve
Smothermon from Porterville got his 2nd Hanford IMCA Modified win of
2004 ahead of track champion Bryan Burnes and Chad Patterson. Burnes
finished 17 points ahead of Paul Stone when Stone could only manage
a 13th in the finale. Ron D:Artenay Jr from Coalinga finished off
his Hot Stock championship year with his 8th feature win in 13
starts. He only finished 33 points up on fellow Coalinga resident
Rodney Sullivan. Another Coalinga driver Preston Martin was second
in the feature and Johnny Cardoza debuted a new car with a third
after badly damaging his mount in a race ending crash two weeks
earlier.
Ishii was the quickest of the 20 winged 360 sprint cars at 14.027
with always fast Andy Ferris in second at 14.072. Day ranked third
at 14.110 and Tommy Tarlton had a 14.121. Young rookie Robert Ballou
was fifth ahead of Worth. Jerry Pelayo won heat 1 over Colby Solomon
and Ricci Faria. Another young rookie of the modified midgets, Jeff
Delte won heat 2 over Stan Yockey and Ballou. It was Golden State
champion Jason Statler taking heat 3 ahead of Murphy and Day. Day
posted his sixth feature win ahead of Worth, Murphy, Faria, Yockey,
Craig Stidham, Delte, Rick Williams and Ferris. Ishii is 14 points
back of Worth and 62 ahead of Ballou. Ballou is only 3 ahead of
Tarlton and Pelayo leads Ferris by just 7 points in the sixth place
duel. The Bandit sprint cars were paced in time trials by the 16.087
turned in by Sheridan in the Warren Dorathy car. Holloway ranked
second at 16.100 and Daniel Hood posted a 16.131. Another young
rookie out of the modified midget ranks, Chad Boespflug was fourth
ahead of champion D Pombo Jr, Arron Chaney and Danny Olmstead.
Sheridan then battled from sixth to win heat 1 over D Pombo Jr and
Bobby Elliott, who was subbing in the John Burnett car.
Bakersfield's Bobby Davis Jr won heat 2 over Chaney and Merced
rookie Steve Williams. Reeves outraced Dave Knott and Hood in heat 3
and it was Petaluma regular Norm Johns returning to his favorite
track to win heat 4 over Matt Day and Harvey Jr. They advanced the
top four from each heat and they were joined by six transfers from
an 11 car B Main. Holloway won the B Main over Murphy, Evan Suggs,
Jonathan Logan and Shawn Edwards. In the feature action, it was all
Sheridan ahead of Reeves, Harvey Jr, Murphy, Chaney, Elliott, D
Pombo Jr, Rusty Carlile and Richard Brace Jr. Sheridan claimed
fourth in points ahead of Burnett and Reeves.
The IMCA Modifieds checked in with 18 cars including Watsonville
regular Mark Sargent and Ventura regular Wes Richardson. Mark
Hamblin broke in hot laps and A J Wright was done after the heat
action to leave a 16 car feature. Joe Chapman beat Stone and
Patterson in heat1 while it was Burnes taking heat 2 over Mike
Villanueva and Claudine Contente. Billy Wilker won heat 3 over Jim
Reed and Richardson. Smothermon was last in heat 1 so he came from
the rear of the field to capture the feature race ahead of Burnes,
Patterson, Richardson, Ed Nichols, Sargent, Villanueva, Tom Stidham
and Wilker. C Contente ran 11th and finished third in points, 23
ahead of Smothermon and 45 ahead of the consistent Nichols. The Hot
Stocks had an 11 car field that included a token appearance by
California State Street Stock Championship Series titlest Rich
Denman. Denman did not run a heat race, but managed a 9th in the
feature. J T Contente did beat D'Artenay in heat 1 with Cardoza
third. Martin beat Sullivan and Tony Contente in heat 2. D'Artenay
made it 8 wins in just 13 races in the feature ahead of Martin,
Cardoza, Sullivan, J Contente, T Contente, Mark Courtney and Joe
Fisher. T Contente was third in points, 35 behind Sullivan.
