San Felipe Pueblo, NM....Sept 4.....The
second night of a two night holiday weekend special at Hollywood Hills Speedway
found track point leader Bumper Jones finishing off a perfect weekend as he won
both his heat and the $1000 feature in the Barnett Harley Davidson Dirt
Modifieds on Saturday night. Jones won his heat race from dead last and then
captured the feature honors from 8th starting. El Paso's Curt Barnett ran
second and 14 year old Stormy Scott finished off a strong weekend with a third
ahead of Arkansas invader Richie Tosh. Gallup's Kevin Menapace had his best HH
run with a fifth in a former Jones mount. The NMMRA unwinged sprint cars joined
the action on Saturday night and Lubbock TX invader Leighton Crouch got the $950
win in the 20 lap feature ahead of Jody Williams and Bobby Seals. Crouch also
came from 8th starting. Wheeling a used Larry Shaw car that the Barnett team
bought for the Hollywood Hills action, Curt Barnett won both the heat and
feature for the dirt late models. Butch Reid Sr provided the pressure during the
feature but lapped traffic allowed Friday night winner Ron Frazier to get around
Reid Sr late for second place. Ron Frazier Jr did get his second win of the
weekend in the street stocks and holds a solid point lead over fveature runnerup
Joe Smithberger. Female racer Charla Robinson had the hobby stock lead until the
closing laps when Friday night winner Steve Bonesteel drove by to post his
second straight win. Robinson salvaged second ahead of Phil York and Dan Harmon.
The
dirt modifieds had a 30 car turnout for their second night of action and Christy
Georges joined in to win heat 1 over Mark McClarran and C Barnett. B Jones won
heat 2 over Aztec's Frank Powell Sr and S Scott. Top Aztec racer and car builder
Danny Bradford won heat 3 over Phoenix AZ long tow Dana Fite and Toby Herring.
Aztec's Eddie Farley won heat 3 over Troy Godwin and J R Fanelli. Richard
Johnson beat Johnny Scott, Jeff Davis, Ron Frazier Jr and Menapace in the B
Main. The A Main had a scary crash between Herring, Frazier Jr, Godwin and
Davis. Only Herring was able to finish the race. Tosh battled back from a spin
to finish fourth behind winner B Jones, C Barnett and S Scott. Menapace ran
fifth ahead of Powell Sr, J Scott, McClarran, Taylor Yazzie and Kevin McDonald.
The unwinged
sprint cars split 24 cars into three heat races. David Burns won the first over
Jared Scutt and Robert Jansson. Tim West beat Kristy Smith and Williams in heat
2 and Bo Baker beat Crouch and Kelly Denison in heat 3. Nick Rael won the B Main
over J C Powell Jr and Chris Faber. The A Main had 20 starters, but a tough
start as five cars got together in turn 2 and both West and Baker flipped. Baker
flipped numerous times and both were done along with Powell Jr. Crouch battled
from his fourth row start to win with Williams second ahead of Seals, Charlie
Fegan, Denison, Scutt, Smith, Rael, Burns and point leader Tom Ball. Ball is
just 9 points up on 12th place finisher Jon Taylor and 29 ahead of Baker.
Williams climbed into fifth in points behind Denison.
The
dirt late models fielded 8 cars and Barnett won the heat race over Frazier Jr
and Marc Herrera. The feature was mainly a duel between Barnett and Reid Sr, but
lapped traffic cost Reid Sr as he got trapped trying to pass Barnett and ended
up losing 2nd to Frazier Jr. Reid Sr did run third over Ralph Dutcher, Monte
Neff, Steve Conrad Jr, Herrera and Eloy Romero. The street stock count grew to
14, but they still raced in a pair of heat races with Donnie Gross beating Aztec
star Rex Higgins in heat 1 and Rick Boelter taking heat 2 over Aztec's Jesse
Baldwin and Smithberger. Top runner Jay Pape was missing after blowing up on
Friday night. Smithberger looked like he was going to take the feature honors,
but Friday night winner Frazier made a last turn move to pull alongside. They
drag raced to the flag and Frazier Jr won by a foot over Smithberger. Henry
Alvridres ran ran third over R Higgins and Boelter. The hobby stocks again had
26 cars and 25 made the call for their feature. Phil York beat Lee Abers in heat
1 and John Cruickshank won heat 2 over S Bonesteel. J R Bonesteel outraced Dan
Harmon and Colt Treharn in heat 3. During the feature, one car lost it's fuel
cell and two others raced over it. It took several minutes to figure out which
car had lost the cell. Robinson led the feature until S Bonesteel made his late
race winning pass. Robinson ran second over York, Harmon and Ronnie Leathem Jr.
After the two
nights of racing at Hollywood Hills, many of the dirt modifieds ventured to
Sertoma Speedway in Tullarosa for a $2000 to win Sunday night show. They had a
22 car turnout and C Barnett got the rich win over Lorne Wofford and Fito
Gallardo.
