Pueblo San Felipe, NM....August
28.....Colorado long tows Patrick Bourke and Rich Bubak finished 1-2
Saturday night as the SCOA winged 410 sprint cars finished off a two night show
at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Bourke missed the dash, but battled from 7th
starting to get the $2750 win and Bubak ran second ahead of Friday night
runnerup Rickey Hood. Friday night winner Jason Martin from Liberal KS was
dueling Bubak for the lead when he got tangled up with Dion Hindi and had to
restart in the rear. He managed to make it back to a 7th place finish. A rim
riding effort by Tom Ball gained him the lead on lap 12 and he won the 25 lap
NMMRA unwinged sprint car feature for his second 2004 season victory. The win
paid $950 and Ball improved his point lead over Jon Taylor to 9 points with the
win. Jeff Brumfield finished second ahead of Bo Baker and Chris Faber. The dirt
modifieds returned 34 cars strong and Alamogordo's Lorne Wofford got the $1000
win for a second straight night in his GRT. Johnny Scott made it two straight
second place runs and Aaron Spangler from Dove Creek CO joined the action on
Saturday and ran third. Spangler also raced the Montezuma Speedway house car in
the unwinged sprint car action, but had a tough night and finished 21st.
All but one of the winged 410 sprint cars returned for night two. They were
divided into three heat races and Phoenix youngster Justin Fisher won heat 1
over Martin and Bubak. Robert Gomez from Albuquerque won heat 2 over Edwards CO
resident Bourke and dwarf car star Nick DeVilbiss, who got a ride in one of the
Grady family cars. Albuquerque's James High won heat 3 over Hood and John Stroud
Jr. Gomez got the pole position for the feature action by winning the dash ahead
of Bubak, High, Fisher, Martin and Hood. Fifth starter Martin had chased down
leader Bubak in the feature action when Hindi slowed suddenly with a burning
left rear brake. Martin got collected in the incident and had to restart in the
rear. Bourke came from 7th to take the lead from Bubak and get the win. Bubak
ran second ahead of Hood, High, Fisher, Slinkard, Martin, Stroud Jr, Scott Box
and Kaylene Verville.
The
unwinged sprint car action drew 27 cars and Tim Jones came from fifth to win the
first heat over El Paso's Don Grable and Steve Copeland. Grable races in the
winged 305 sprint car class at home. Chris Faber led the first half of heat 2,
but bobbled and Tim West got the win over Jody Williams with C Faber in third.
Leighton Crouch from Lubbock TX won heat 3 ahead of Grants veteran Bo Baker and
young Taylor. Nick Rael got the B Main win over Kelly Denison, David Burns and
visitor Robert Jansen. Gary Appel from Lubbock TX was fifth. Kristy Smith led
the early stages of the 25 lap feature. West spun for a lap 1 yellow and
Brumfield led lap 2 over C Faber and Smith. By lap 5, rim rider Ball had raced
into second from a 13th place start. Ball took the lead on lap 12 and won ahead
of Brumfield, Baker, C Faber, Charlie Fegan, Taylor, 15th starter Rael, J C
Powell Jr, Grable and Williams. Copeland flipped in the feature action. Ball
leads Taylor by 9 points and Baker by 32 as the club returns to action at
Hollywood Hills on Sept 4.
The
dirt modifieds split their large turnout into four heat races and only the top 3
from each advanced. Santa Fe's Kyle Odom won heat 1 over Colorado visitor Jason
Haug and Ron Frazier Jr. Wofford continued his strong weekend with a win in heat
2 over Taylor Yazzie and Spangler. J Scott got heat 3 ahead of Rob Haaland and
Richard Johnson. Troy Treharn outraced El Paso's Troy Godwin and Toby Herring in
heat 4. The B Main action moved 12 more drivers into the A Main and Stormy Scott
got that win over Bumper Jones, Mark McClarran, Tyrone Yazzie, Curt Barnett,
Brandon Carley, Show Low AZ long tow Ed Beebe and Gallup's Kevin Menapace. For
the second straight night, Wofford made a strong early charge from 10th to build
a full straight lead that was wiped out by a caution. J Scott worked his way
from 11th to 2nd and had a couple restart shots at Wofford, but couldn't stay
with Wofford's rim riding mount. Race car builder Spangler ran third ahead of
Treharn, Herring, Aztec's Jeff Davis, B Jones, S Scott, Butch Reid Sr, Johnson
and Haug.
Labor Day weekend sees another two day show at
the track as the modifieds, dirt late models, street stocks and hobby stocks
race on Friday night and they are joined by the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars on
Saturday night. With El Paso and Las Cruces giving their dirt modifieds the
weekend off and Aztec dark, a larger field of cars is expected.
