by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprints, Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars and IMCA Modifieds

Hanford, CA....August 28.........Series point leader Ronnie Day got his fourth win in the 13 2004 races by driving to a $1500 victory in the 30 lap Rebel Cup winged 360 sprint car feature at Kings Speedway Saturday night. The race had a ten car inversion and Day came from fifth for his win with 8th starter Ricci Faria a $1000 second. Tommy Tarlton raced from 4th to a $650 third and moved into a tie for fourth in the series standings. Day holds a solid 59 point lead on Garrett Ishii, who is just 2 points in front of Tim Worth. Brent Kaeding joined the Rebel Cup action and came from 16th starting to finish fourth. A graduate of the modified midget and mini sprint ranks, 16 year old Bandit rookie Chad Boespflug got his first 25 lap feature win and did it in impressive fashion as he lined up 8th as the division fast timer. He has only ran 9 of the races and is buried in the point standings. Scott Holloway started in the 4th row alongside Boespflug and chased him to the win with series point leader Davey Pombo Jr  coming from 16th starting to third ahead of 18th starter John Burnett. Merced's Paul Stone closed to within 6 points of defending track champion Bryan Burnes by winning his third 25 lap IMCA Modified feature, but has only one race on Sept 25th to try and make up that margin. P Stone came from 12th for his $400 win, but Burnes started 9th and finished 2nd to stay in the point lead. Outside front row starter Aaron Barnell ran third ahead of Claudine Contente. Contente only needs to appear for that final race to wrap up third in points.

The winged 360 Rebel Cup sprint car division had a 21 car turnout and usual winged 410 racer Brian Coelho set quick time with his 14.061 clocking. Andy Ferris ran a 14.205, R Faria a 14.227 and Kaeding a 14.235. The Kaeding time was later tied by Ishii with rookie Jeff Delte also in the 14.2 bracket. Day was 7th. Mark Barroso won heat 1 over Day and Colby Solomon with both Kaeding and Stan Yockey running outside the top five to miss the inversion. Tarlton beat John Giffen and Danny Faria Jr in heat 2 and Jerry Pelayo won heat 3 over R Faria and Wayne Williams. Monty Ferriera broke in time trials and his night was over. The 30 lap feature had a ten car inversion that placed D Faria Jr and Tim Worth on the front row ahead of Williams and Tarlton. Kaeding lined up 16th. It was fifth starter Day racing to the win ahead of 8th starter Faria and Tarlton. Kaeding caught the attention of the crowd with his drive from 16th to 4th as point runnerup rivals Worth and Ishii ran 5-6. Rookie Robert Ballou ran 7th ahead of Ferris, Coelho and Yockey. Ballou is tied for fourth in points with Tarlton.

The unwinged 360 Bandit sprint cars fielded 24 teams and Boespflug surprised with his quick time of 16.010. Series point leader Pombo Jr was second quick at 16.390, but a sixth in his heat kept him out of the feature inversion. Holloway has impressed in his rookie Bandit season after several years with the NCMA spec sprints. He timed in third quick at 16.390. Gene Manhire ran a 16.443 and Arron Chaney a 16.445. Terry Schank Jr won heat 1 over Boespflug and Evan Suggs. Brad Evett outraced Jonathan Logan and Jason Montgomery in heat 2 and it was Rusty Carlile winning heat 3 over Holloway and Matt Day. Albert Pombo broke in hot laps and the night ended for Bobby Davis Jr in the heat action. That left 22 cars for the 25 lap feature and the feature inversion was an 8. That placed Logan and visitor Richard Brace Jr in the front row ahead of Richard Harvey Jr and Suggs. Third row starters were Chaney and Manhire while Holloway and Boespflug made up row 4. The top ten at the checkered flag had just 3 cars that started in the front four rows as 8th starting Boespflug beat 7th starter Holloway. D Pombo Jr came from 16th to place third over 18th starter Burnett and 12th starting Carlile. Suggs was sixth ahead of Montgomery, Schank Jr, Jim Richardson and Steve DeMott. With Harvey getting 20th, D Pombo Jr holds a 27 point lead. Burnett moved around the absent Danny Sheridan into third in points, 104 behind D Pombo Jr. Holloway is tied with Sheridan four fourth and the absent A J Burgin stands 6th ahead of rookie Jimmy Reeves, who was 13th this night.

There were 15 IMCA Modifieds including the 2004 season debut for Bobby Hogge. Point leader Burnes won the first heat over Jon Schlundt and Hogge. Female star Contente won heat 2 in front of Billy Wilker and Nichols. The early action took it's toll as top runner Steve Smothermon, North Fork's Ray Mayer and A J Wright were all feature scratches. Hogge was the first car to drop out of the 25 lapper and P Stone came from the sixth row to win in his Victory Chassis. Burnes came from 9th to place second and front row starter Barnell was third ahead of Contente, Nichols, Jim Reed and Wilker. Pole starter Tom Stidham was fourth at the checkered flag, but was disqualified when he failed to stop in the claim area at the end of the race.

Kings Speedway is dark on Labor Day weekend but returns with a big show on September 11th as they host the final point race for the hotly contested CarQuest Western Xtreme Dirt Car Series dirt late models. The winged Rebel Cup 360 sprint cars and the Hot Stocks will provide the support action that night. Defending Series champion John Silva paces the CarQuest points by 17 over Bobby Hogge IV and 20 ahead of Eric Jacobsen as they head into their Sept 4th date at Bakersfield Speedway Park. The top six is rounded out by Richard Papenhausen, Larry Damitz and Mike Johnson.
