Hanford, CA....August 14.....Wheeling
the Chaffin entry, new track record holder Damian Gardner paced the final 26
laps to win the 30 lap USAC/CRA unwinged 410 sprint car feature Saturday night
at Kings Speedway. Gardner lowered the track record to 15.162 seconds for the
3/8 mile clay oval and he also won his heat race. The win was his fourth in the
seven USAC/CRA events staged in 2004 and he trails point leader Rip Williams by
just 11 points going into two straight Saturday nights at Perris Auto Speedway.
Mike Kirby wheeled the Crossno car to second ahead of Australia's Peter Murphy,
point leader Rip Williams and Petaluma's Terry Schank. Having seen his four race
winning streak snapped at the previous race, Hot Stock point leader Ron
D'Artenay Jr returned to the winner's circle this week for his sixth win. Tony
Contente ran second ahead of Preston Martin.
The unwinged 410 sprint car action drew a solid 30 car turnout and Gardner's
quick time of 15.162 easily paced the 15.383 turned in by Rick Williams, who was
running a 360 engine. Driving for the Tarlton family, Murphy was third quick at
15.615 and Bobby Cody ran a 15.626. Greg Taylor ranked fifth in the Sala entry
ahead of Kirby, Rodney Argo and J Hicks. Four heat races advanced the top four
from each into the 30 lap A Main. Gardner won heat 1 over Kevin Urton and Arron
Chaney. It was Jordan Hermansader putting the Alexander car into the winner's
circle in heat 2 over Rick Williams and Steve Ostling. Wheeling the Jory entry,
Rip Williams got the heat 3 win over local Bandit regular Jonathan Logan and
Argo. Cody outraced Ronnie Case, last week's $2100 Bandit winner at Santa Maria
Danny Sheridan and Schank. Five cars transferred from the B Main were it was
Murphy winning over Taylor, former Lightning Sprint star David Cardey, Hicks and
Brian Venard. Argo and Cody each led one lap of the main event before fifth
starting Kirby nosed in front for two rounds. It was 8th starting Gardner taking
command on lap 5 and he raced to the 30 lap win over Kirby, Murphy, Rip
Williams, Schank, Rick Williams, Greg Bragg, Ostling, Cody and Hicks. Murphy
came from 9th to run third after winning the B Main. Sheridan started 2nd in the
Dorathy car, but a flat tire and then a broken front end relegated him to 20th.
Rip Williams leads Gardner by 11 point and Kirby by 68.
The Hot Stock count rebounded to 9 cars with some Bakersfield participation.
Dave Bauer made a rare 2004 appearance and won heat 1 over Jeremiah VanScoy and
Bill Stevens. D'Artenay had a perfect night as he won heat 2 over Martin and
Keith Heaslet. The feature finish found D'Artenay winning over Contente, Martin,
Bill Little, VanScoy, Stevens and Bauer. Previous week winner Rodney Sullivan
missed the heat action and ran last in the feature behind Heaslet.
August 21 will see the final 100 lap Enduro of 2004 and the IMCA Modifieds and
Hot Stocks will round out the three division show.
