Unwinged Sprint Cars, Dirt Late Models, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

San Felipe Pueblo, NM....August 7.......Having earlier earned the pole by winning the JE Pistons Trophy Dash, Rickie Gaunt from Torrance CA led all 30 laps in his Tony Smiley mount to gain the rich win as the SCRA sanctioned $44,000 Non Wing World Championship two night show at Hollywood Hills Speedway concluded on Saturday night. Friday night preliminary winner Mike Kirby ran second in the Dale Crossno car and Gaunt teammate Charles Davis Jr started fifth and finished third. Davis had earlier set fast time and won his heat race. Rick Ziehl from Las Cruces NM was fourth ahead of Show Low AZ long tow Robert Hall Jr. The race was cut from it's scheduled 40 laps to 30 laps because SCRA director Ronnie Shuman was afraid of the tire wear on the dry slick 3/8 mile clay oval. Arizona drivers swept the top 3 spots in the dirt late model feature for a second straight night as Keith Noyes from Phoenix outraced Casa Grande's Mike Tahtinen and another Phoenix long tow Chris Cross. Noyes was paid a $100 bonus above the $450 winners' check for leading every lap in the feature. Aztec Speedway racer Jesse Baldwin wheeled his IMCA Stock Car to a $425 win in the street stock feature ahead of Ron Frazier Jr and former Aztec champion Allen Bradley.
J R Bonesteel got the hobby stock feature win worth $350 for a second straight night with Kenny Wheeler second ahead of Randy Carter.

Kirby, Steve Ostling, Ziehl and Gaunt earned spots in the dash with their 1-2-3-4 finish on Friday night. The car count grew to 44 as more of the New Mexico teams joined the Saturday night action. Davis earned quick time honors with his 16.711 lap and Mike Spencer ran a 16.774 effort. Bakersfield CA youngster Alan Ballard was third at 16.897 and Mel Murphy from Riverside CA ranked fourth at 17.018. The top ten times were rounded out by Hall Jr, Bruce St James, David Burns, Justin Fisher, Bobby Seals and Kelly Denison. Each of the four heat races advanced the top four into the A Main. Davis came from the rear to win heat 1 over Hall Jr and Seals. Robert Gomez got the heat 2 win over winged star Jason Martin from Kansas and Friday night fast timer Charlie Fegan won heat 3 over Tim West and Ballard. Leighton Crouch from Lubbock TX won heat 4 over Bo Baker and James High. The top four time trailers to advance through the heat action joined the Friday night top four in the 8 car JE Pistons Dash. Gaunt earned the pole for the 30 lapper with his win over Kirby, Ostling, Ziehl, Davis, Hall Jr, Spencer and Ballard. The top 28 time trailers had earned heat race assignments and everyone else raced the 8 lap C Main with the top four earning that last heat race starting spot. Jeff Brumfield Jr won the C Main over Jared Scutt, Paul Whitehead and Lubbock racer Gary Appel. Four transfer spots were available in the 12 lap B Main and Denison got that win over Tom Ball, St James and Robert Marfia Jr. Appel clipped a stalled car and flipped. Just missing the move up were New Mexico's Jody Williams, Jon Taylor and Brumfield Jr. The A Main had 24 starters with Gaunt, Kirby, Ostling asnd Ziehl in the front two rows. The race started with an unusual five car melee as Denison ended up sitting on top of the cars of Ball, Ballard, J Martin and Seals. Everyone except Seals was able to continue. Gaunt and Kirby waged a race long duel that wasn't decided until the final corner with Gaunt getting the win. Kirby settled for second and Davis ran third ahead of Ziehl, Hall JR, young Phoenix racer Justin Fisher, Ronnie Clark, James High, Fegan and Ballard.

The hard crash on Friday night limited the dirt late models to 11 cars on Saturday with four from Arizona and El Paso TX racer Curt Barnett. Cross won his heat race for a second straight night as Toby Herring ran second over Friday night winner Adam Crippen. Noyes won heat 2 ahead of Tahtinen and Barnett. Noyes had the pole for the feature action and he led every lap for his $100 bonus. Tahtinen ran second for the second straight night and Cross was third ahead of Herring and Butch Reid Sr.

The street stocks fell back to 11 cars as the teams involved in the Aztec Speedway point battle had to return home for the point action there. Jeff Whyman won the first heat over Rick Boelter and James Tyrell with Baldwin the heat 2 winner over Bradley and Frazier Jr. Baldwin raced from sixth starting to the lead on first lap and he won with Frazier Jr just nipping Bradley for second. Whyman was fourth ahead of Boelter. The hobby stock count grew by four to 28 cars for Saturday. Double division Whyman won heat 1 over Suzanne Bonesteel and Boyd Ellis. Fourteen year old Colt Treharn won heat 2 over Ronnie Leathem Jr and Ron Frazier Jr. Shane Kapinski outraced Randall Trujillo and Robert Kapinski in heat 3. The heat action saw John Cruickshank get hit hard headon. He was unhurt and able to race in the feature. Treharn was forced high in the feature action and hit the pit exit wall headon. Trujillo spun and was hit hard by Tim Knight. As Trujillo slid into the infield, he was hit head on by R Kapinski. J R Bonesteel won for the second straight night ahead of Wheeler, Carter, Randall Yates and S Kapinski.
