Show Low, AZ....July 24.....The
NMMRA unwinged sprint cars took their act on the road to Arizona for the first
time as a 22 car field invaded Thunder Raceway in Show Low. Former
champion Tom Ball took the lead on lap 16 and won the 25 lap feature over former
rookie of the year Kelly Denison and Jon Taylor. The win increased Ball's series
point lead to 12 points over Taylor and 13 ahead of Denison. Ryan Henesey
outraced Pat Henesey to win the dwarf car feature as Frank Phillips placed
third.
The sprint car turnout included three Arizona teams and the cars were divided
into three heat races. Outside front row starter Paul Whitehead won heat 1 over
Ted McAdams and Tim Jones. Heat two also went to the outside front row starter
Jeff Brumfield Jr and Jody Williams was second ahead of J C Powell Jr and
Glendale AZ racer Mike Miller. Larry Stoerkel won heat 3 from the pole over
Denison and Bo Baker. With dark threatening clouds, only a few sprinkles
occurred and the drivers enjoyed the high speed tacky track conditions. David
Burns was the only feature scratch. NMMRA uses big inversions on their feature
lineup and Whitehead was the early leader. Robert Hall Jr brought out a yellow
flag on lap 2 and Brumfield Jr got into the back fence for a lap 7 yellow flag.
Seventh starting Powell Jr moved into second ahead of Denison, Stoerkel and
Williams. The red flag fell on lap 9 as Bobby Seals tangled with Jimmy Scott, M
Miller and Bo Baker. Ted McAdams hooked the brim for another caution on lap 12.
Denison raced into the lead only to see another red when Whitehead, Powell Jr,
Stoerkel and Williams tangled. When racing resumed Denison led Whitehead, Ball,
Baker and Powell Jr. Baker was racing with a flat left rear tire. Powell forced
another yellow and was done with Ball taking the lead from Denison on lap 16 and
winning ahead of Denison, Taylor, Baker, Tim Jones, McAdams, Kristy Smith and
Whitehead. Several of the NMMRA teams will race with the SCRA unwinged sprint
cars at Hollywood Hills on August 6-7, but the next NMMRA action is another
double point show at Cortez, CO. The series has already made one very successful
trip to that Four Corners territory track.
The dwarf cars split 15 cars into a pair of heat races and Matt Lund won the
first over Helen Henesey and Ryan Henesey. P Henesey was out front in heat 2
over Randy Anderson and Storm Phillips. R Henesey was chased to his feature win
by P Henesey, F Phillips, Anderson, Jim Davis, Lund, S Phillips, Larry Stewart
and H Henesey.
