Hanford, CA....July 16-17......Series
title hopeful Andy Forsberg and returning World of Outlaws racer Tim Kaeding
shared the 30 lap feature wins as Kings Speedway staged it's annual Pombo
Sargent Classic for the Golden State Challenge Series winged 410 sprint cars on
Friday and Saturday night. After timing in 9th quick, Forsberg was forced to
qualify through the B Main then made a sterling drive through the pack from the
9th row to collect that $3500 win. Sean Becker appeared headed to the win, but
ran out of fuel and Forsberg was chased across the finish line by Kaeding and
series point leader Jason Statler. Both nights had 26 cars in action and Kaeding
started outside front row in his wire to wire $3500 win on Saturday night in the
Beef Packers car. Becker salvaged his weekend with a $1500 second and Tommy
Tarlton spun across the finish line for a $1000 third after a final straight
incident with Mike Faria. The traveling Bandit Unwinged 360 sprint cars rounded
out the Saturday night card and Danny Sheridan made it six wins in just 10
starts with the series as he nipped double division racer Rick Williams at the
checkered flag. Scott Holloway was closing fast for a solid third place finish.
Five new members were inducted in the Hall of Fame during the weekend. They
included Fred Ede Sr, Les Martella, Mel West, Dickie Deis and Lloyd Beard.
Tulare's Brian Coelho was quickest of the 26 winged 410 sprint cars on Friday
night with his 13.833 lap. Blake Robertson from Visalia put his Sacramento based
car in second at 13.909. Jim Skinner ran a 13.953 and Kevin Pylant nipped
Kaeding for fourth, 14.050 to 14.062. Tommy Tarlton ranked sixth and Jason York
returned to winged competition in 7th ahead of Steve Kent, Forsberg and Statler.
The teams were divided into four invert 6 heat races with only the top four
advanced out of each. Track conditions were quick and several top runners missed
the transfer. Kaeding beat Jerry Bonnema and Danny Faria Jr in heat 1. Mike
Faria captured heat 2 ahead of Robertson and Statler. Craig Stidham returned to
action after an absence with a 4th. Ricci Faria won heat 3 over Charlie Louden
and Skinner. Garrett Ishii made four Central California based teams getting the
heat wins as he won heat 4 over Dennis Moore Jr and Kent. Pylant won the talent
filled B Main ahead of Tarlton, Forsberg, York, Shain Matthews and Doug Moles.
Seventh place Rick Williams got to move up when Matthews scratched. Forsberg put
on a show with his drive through the field to win the 30 lap feature over $1500
runnerup Kaeding and $1000 third Statler. Robertson ran fourth ahead of Coelho,
Moore, R Faria, Pylant, Stidham, Tarlton, Ishii and Louden. Becker finished 13th
after running out of fuel while leading. It was Forsberg's 2nd Golden State win
of 2004.
The Saturday 26 car turnout had a different makeup and Statler was quick time on
a slower 3/8 mile clay oval at 14.293. Becker rebounded from his Friday night
disappointment with second quick time at 14.325 and R Faria ran a 14.3967.
Robertson clicked off a 14.380 and Kent had a 14.386. Tarlton was sixth ahead of
Coelho, York, Kaeding and Moore. Again several of the fast timers missed the cut
as only the top 4 from each heat race advanced. Kaeding won the opening heat for
a second straight night ahead of Statler and Forsberg. Louden had another strong
run with a win in heat 2 over Tarlton and Ishii. Andy Gregg from Placerville won
heat 3 ahead of winged rookie Aaron Altaffer and Pylant. Johnny Key joined the
action on Saturday and won heat 4 over Stidham and M Faria. Jim Skinner won the
B Main over R Faria, Robertson and Moore. Monty Ferriera ran fifth over Mark
Barroso. Those six cars transferred, but the fact that R Faria, Robertson and
Moore had all missed the move in the heat action put 11th quick Pylant and 9th
quick Kaeding on the front row for the 30 lapper with the invert 8 option.
Kaeding raced to the win with fourth row starter Becker impressing in his drive
to 2nd. Talrton and Faria tangled on the last straight and Tarlton spun across
the line in 3rd ahead of Pylant, Statler, Robertson, Skinner, M Faria, Forsberg,
York and Ishii. Only two events remain on the 2004 Golden State Challenge Series
point schedule and both will run at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway on July
23-24. Statler enters the final weekend 39 points up on Forsberg with Robertson
another 20 points back in third. Pylant is 25 behind Robertson and just 9 ahead
of Becker. The feature win was the 7th of the year for Kaeding despite his part
time schedule.
The Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars have an exciting point season going also and
they had 25 teams check in. Among the missing was point series title contender A
J Burgin. Sheridan has missed three races on the series, but is a strong
contender every time that he appears. Sheridan set fast time with his 16.969
clocking that just nipped the 16.982 of surprise entrant Mike Kirby, a usual
unwinged 410 star. Double division racer R Williams was third at 17.046 and
Graeagle's Jim Richardson made the long tow south to post a 17.242 lap for
fourth quick. Rookie Steven Williams was fifth quick at 17.263. The teams were
divided into four heat races with the top four in each earning the right to be
considered for the feature inversion. John Burnett beat series title contender
Richard Harvey Jr in heat 1 with Sheridan third. Jonathan Logan won heat 2 over
young rookie Chad Boespflug and Brad Evett. Gene Manhire won heat 3 over
Holloway and IMCA Modified graduate Jimmy Reeves. It was Peter Murphy wheeling a
Tarlton car to the heat 4 win over Jason Montgomery and Richardson. Kirby ran
5th and S Williams 6th so both started deep in the pack for the main event.
Sheridan went on to post the narrow win over R Williams with Holloway third
ahead of Kirby, Boespflug, S Williams, Harvey, Daniel Hood, Richardson and Evan
Suggs. Davey Pombo Jr ran 11th and came out of the night just 9 points up on
Harvey. Burgin fell 43 points out of the point lead and Sheridan is fourth, 74
points back despite the three missing events.
On July 24th, Kings Speedway
will feature the winged 360 Rebel Cup sprint cars, the IMCA Modifieds and the
Hot Stocks.
