Show Low, AZ...June 19.....Las Vegas
NV long tow Jay Ervine raced to the win in the unwinged sprint car special at
Thunder Raceway on Saturday night by outracing Southwest legend Rickey Hood. J T
Imperial ran third. The show had been booked as an NMMRA sanctioned race, but
became a non-sanctioned show when the Phoenix AZ ASCA cars were left without a
race due to the Manzanita ownership changeover dark night. An agreement could
not be reached with the New Mexico group to allow the Arizona teams to not be
handicapped in the heat race lineups. NMMRA still encouraged their teams to
attend and nine of the 21 cars on hand were members of NMMRA. Jumping into the
Buddy Burnett car that won the recent 50 lap special for the Pro Stocks, most
recent dirt modified feature winner Jeff Anderson drove to a victory in the Pro
Stock feature with Globe's Don Earven second in his first local start of 2004.
Earven was battling for the Casa Grande track title this summer when a dispute
with the track officials saw him stop racing there.
The solid turnout of unwinged sprint cars were divided into three qualifying
heat races and New Mexico legend Bo Baker from Grants won heat 1 over Tim Beal
and young New Mcxico charger Jon Taylor. Hood outraced Phoenix youngster Josh
Pelkey and Robert Hall in heat 2 while former NMMRA rookie of the year Kelly
Dennison won heat 3 over Michael Bryan and Andy Reinbold. Imperial and Ervine
were 4-5 in the heat 3 finish. Paul Whitehead was unable to start the main event
after earlier problems while a hot lap crash left Dave Burns out of the heat
action. Burns did get his car repaired to make an appearance in the feature. An
accident in the feature forced Baker to be hospitalized with a broken arm. Nick
Rael, Jeff Brumfield Jr and Burns all failed to finish the feature. Ervine raced
to the win ahead of Hood, Imperial, Taylor, Jody Williams, Reinbold, Pelkey,
Bryan, Denison, Hall and Beal.
The track divided 14 Pro Stocks into three heat races. Point leader Dave
Totherow won the first ahead of Brad Dorsey and Yvonne Doyle. Anderson outraced
Eric Armenta and Ryan Peterson in heat 2 and Richard Malone took heat 3 over Jay
Niver and Wayne Totherow. In the feature, it was Anderson on top of D Earven,
Dorsey, Tim Thomas, D Totherow, Malone, Armenta, Niver, Peterson and Robert
Riley. D Totherow's point lead is 20 over Niver and 38 ahead of Armenta.
Peterson is two points back of Armenta and 6 ahead of Vernon Totherow.
The dirt modifieds, pro stocks and dwarf cars race on June 26 and the dirt
modifieds and mini sprints are featured on a two day special on July 3-4. The
mini stocks join the Saturday night action on that weekend.
