San Felipe Pueblo, NM....June 12......2002
SCOA rookie of the year James High from the Albuquerque suburb of Sandia Park
got his first ever feature win with the traveling series as he captured the
Saturday night portion of their two night stop at Hollywood Hills Speedway. High
has run strong in 2004 and he put forth a dominant night as he ran second in his
heat, won the dash and then took the feature honors ahead of another Albuquerque
racer Scott Box and Liberal KS invader Dennis Park. The win paid $2750. Friday
night winner Jason Martin battled back from an early spin and took the checkered
flag in sixth, but was disqualified for rough driving and fined. The second
night of action for the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars found heat winners Charlie
Fegan and Kristy Smith dueling for the win and Fegan from Bosque Farms got his
first 2004 win. Nick Rael and David Burns rounded out the top four. Fegan's win
paid $950. For the second straight weekend, Bumper Jones from Las Cruces had
success in the northern part of the state as he collected the $1000 win in the
Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modifieds after a third place run on Friday
night. The previous weekend, he put together a win and a second in two nights of
racing at Aztec Speedway. Las Cruces area racers claimed four of the top five
spots on Saturday night with Lorne Wofford second ahead of Anton Salopek, local
Butch Reid Sr and 14 year old Johnny Scott.
The SCOA
winged 410 sprint cars again attracted 22 cars with Friday night racer Kaylene
Verville missing and Fegan electing to join the winged action. Box won the first
heat race ahead of High and teenaged rookie Justin Fisher. Rickey Hood won heat
2 with Park second ahead of J Martin. Dion Hindi won heat 3 with Brian
O'Donnell's MoPar second ahead of El Paso's Shawn Sander. High captured
the dash in front of O'Donnell, Hindi, Hood, Box and Park. Fisher was a scratch
from the main event and J Martin ended up being disqualified from his sixth
place finish for his overly aggressive driving as he battled back from an early
race spin. The 25 year old High was chased to his feature win by Box, Park,
Jason Grady, Mike Grady, Jesse Baker, O'Donnell, John Stroud Jr, Robert Gomez,
Jeff Slnkard and Steve Martin. Unwinged winner Fegan ran 12th in the winged
feature action.
The NMMRA unwinged
sprint cars fielded 25 cars for a second straight night with Russell Gossett
sitting out after his serious injuries on Friday night and Memorial Day winner
Robert Marfia Jr in action after missing the Friday night show. Fegan won the
first heat race ahead of Paul Whitehead and Rick Flowers. Smith got her heat win
in heat 2 with Jason Tanner second ahead of Jeff Brumfield Jr. Jody Williams
outraced Marfia Jr and Jon Taylor in heat 3 and Ricky Johnson beat double
division racer Rickey Hood in heat 4. 19 of the 25 feature starters were racing
at the checkered flag, but top runners Williams, Marfia Jr, Jeff Brumfield Jr,
Hood and Johnson were among the dropouts. Fegan got the $950 win ahead of female
ace Smith, Rael, David Burns, Tanner, Taylor, 2003 champion Bo Baker, Kelly
Denison and Tom Ball.
The dirt
modifieds split 32 cars into four heat races and B Jones won the first ahead of
Reid Sr and Jeff Davis. J Scott outraced Bobby Curran and Scott Lynch in heat 2
and his 14 year old twin brother Stormy Scott jumped into the J R Fanelli car
and won heat 3 ahead of Friday night feature winner Curt Barnett and Toby
Herring. Anton Salopek outraced Wofford and Brandon Carley in heat 4. Friday
night runnerup Richard Johnson won the B Main with J J Harpole second ahead of
Tyrone Yazzie, Troy Godwin and Russell Harvey. Edgewood's Reid Sr and Johnson
were the only Albuquerque area cars in the top 8 in the A Main and Robby Haaland
ran 9th as the third best local. The dirt modified feature was the race of the
night as they top four dueled in tight fashion and the final 3 rounds saw it
become an 8 way fight as they got into traffic. B Jones put his D&M
Performance mount in the winner's circle ahead of Wofford's GRT. Salopek
ran third ahead of Reid Sr, J Scott, Johnson, Barnett, Harpole, Haaland, Bobby
Curran, S Scott, Russell Harvey and Godwin. Jason Haug from Salida CO was 14th.
The casino owned
Hollywood Hills Speedway only stages special events and next comes on July 2-3
when the SCOA winged 410 sprints, the ASCS winged 360 sprints and the NMMRA
unwinged sprint cars will do a triple header of sprint car racing. The dirt
modifieds do not return until late August.
