San Felipe Pueblo, NM.....June 11.......Fresh
off his two night sweep of the ASCS Winged 360 sprint car action during Fiesta
Days at Aztec Speedway, Jason Martin from Liberal KS again made the tow west to
New Mexico for two nights of SCOA winged 410 sprint car racing at
Hollywood Hills Speedway. After second place runs in both his heat and the dash,
Martin raced to the Friday night feature win worth $2750. Recent Canyon Raceway
winner Jeff Slinkard ran second ahead of Dion Hindi and Colorado's Rich Bubak.
The casino owned Hollywood Hills track only runs about a dozen weekends a year
and all the events are high dollar specials. The NMMRA unwinged sprint cars were
also in action and J C Powell Jr raced to his first feature win ahead of former
rookie of the year Kelly Denison and Bo Baker, their 2003 champion from Grants.
Powell recently returned to action with a new car after destroying his previous
car in an opening night crash at Hollywood Hills back in April. His win paid
$950. The Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds were the third division
and their $1000 to win action drew cars from every corner of the state. Curt
Barnett drove his Harris to the $1000 victory over former Albuquerque champion
Richard Johnson and Bumper Jones. B Jones was also coming off an impressive
Fiesta Days weekend at Aztec, where he ran 1st and 2nd in his first ever laps at
that 3/8 mile clay oval. Part of the Hollywood Hills appeal is the fact that
they are offering $10,000 point funds for all three of these classes beyond the
usual point funds that the traveling sprint car series chase and beyond the rich
Barnett's Harley Davidson point money for the dirt modifieds.
The SCOA winged 410 sprnt cars
fielded 22 cars and divided them into three heat races. Farmington's Jason Grady
won the first heat ahead of J Martin and Slinkard. Bubak outraced rookie Justin
Fisher and Albuquerque's own Bud Goodwin in heat 2 while Steve Martin won heat 3
over Grants racer Jesse Baker and former WoO regular Hindi. Jason Grady took the
dash ahead of J Martin, Bubak, Slinkard, Fisher and S Martin and that
finish established the front three rows for the A Main event. J Martin flew to
the win ahead of Slinkard, Hindi, Bubak, Rickey Hood, Jason Grady, Goodwin, Mike
Grady, Baker, S Martin, James High and Fisher.
The NMMRA
unwinged sprint cars divided 25 cars into four heat races. Jason Tanner beat
Steve Copeland and Ted McAdams in heat 1 while Kevin Faber got his first win in
heat 2 over Lubbock TX invader Leighton Crouch and Powell Jr. Jody Williams won
heat 3 over Jeff Brumfield Jr and Nick Rael. Russell Gossett was injuried in a
hard flip in heat 3 and Bobby Seals turned his car over to Kelly Seals in order
to travel to the hospital with Gossett. Ricky Johnson won heat 4 over Bo Baker
and Jon Taylor. Powell had the pole for the main event and led just a lap before
he bobbled to hand the top spot to Brumfield Jr. Brumfield Jr spun two laps
later and Powell was in front for the remainder of the race. Denison ran second
ahead of B Baker, Johnson, Crouch, Tom Ball, K Seals, Brumfield Jr, usual USAC
racer David Burns and Williams.
32 dirt modifieds were
divided into five heat races. Brandon Carley outraced B Jones and Barnett in a
talent filled heat 1. Lorne Wofford skipped his winged 305 sprint car action at
El Paso to compete and he won heat 2 in his GRT mount ahead of Troy Godwin and
former Aztec champion J J Harpole. Another Aztec charger Jeff Davis won heat 3
over Butch Reid Sr and Albuquerque's Kevin McDonald. Carlos Dorcas crashed and
suffered a broken wrist to end his weekend. Heat 4 was flagged complete with
just one lap scored and only two cars still running. Johnny Scott beat Steve
Bertetto while Stormy Scott's car suffered enough damage to end it's weekend. S
Scott got a ride in the J R Fanelli car for Saturday night. Johnson won heat 5
ahead of another Las Cruces long tow Anton Salopek and Toby Herring. The
Farmington duo of Tyrone Yazzie and Taylor Yazzie ran 1-2 in the B Main ahead of
Greg Pratt Jr, Mark McClarran and David Sheffield. Twenty Six cars started the A
Main and Barnett got the win ahead of Johnson, B Jones, Wofford, Carley, Godwin,
Pratt Jr, J Scott, Davis, McClarran, Herring, S Bertetto and Kyle Odom.
