RICKY WILLIAMS COLLECTS $2500 FOR HIS USAC WIN IN FERNLEY
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, Midget Lites, Dwarf Cars and 318 Open Wheels

Fernley, NV..May 29.....Burning up six tires on the abrasive track during the night, Northern California's Ricky Williams raced to a $2500 win in the 30 lap feature as the USAC Southwest Unwinged Sprint Cars made their first ever trip into Northern Nevada to race at Reno-Fernley Raceway on Saturday night. The series mainly runs in Arizona and New Mexico, so only three series regulars were willing to make the monster tow to the Reno area track. Series point leader Beau Binder actually raced at his El Paso TX home track on Friday night, then traveled to Fernley to compete on Saturday. Series regulars Leighton Crouch and Binder ran 2-3 in the $8500 race that attracted 8 cars with the Northern California and Nevada support. The BCRA Midget Lites also raced and Scott Kinney inherited that feature win in the Gary Dennett owned mount after apparent victor Doug Hunting was disqualified in post race tech. Tyler Franklin finished second ahead of Scott Clark. A great turnout of 20 dwarf cars saw Nevada's Shawn Salisbury the winner ahead of Kevin Bender and Doug Martin. Rick Looney swept to wins in both the heat race and feature for the 318 Open Wheel class. Veteran Frank Kay got second in both races and Troy Crawford put together two thirds.

Another NorCal invader Danny Olmstead was quickest of the USAC unwinged sprint with a 17.84 qualifying run. Williams ripped off a 18.08 lap and Crouch ranked third at 18.19. Jim Richardson from nearby Graeagle CA was fourth quick at 18.35 and series point leader Binder timed in at 18.47. All 8 cars raced in both heat races and Binder beat Dave Burns and Richardson in heat 1. Williams outraced Crouch and Richardson in heat 2. Williams was never headed in the 30 lap feature as Crouch ran second ahead of Binder, Burns, Matt Fontaine, Olmstead, Nevada's Mark Beck and Richardson. The far flung series next races at Lubbock TX on June 11. Binder came out of the race with a 19 point lead on Burns and 31 points in front of Crouch.

The BCRA Midget Lites brought 21 cars that were split into three hear races. Franklin beat David Maples in heat 1 while Hunting outraced Jeff Griffin in heat 2. Kinney previewed his feature win with a victory in heat 3 over Jared Adams. Adams set the early pace in the 20 lap feature. Maples and Griffin traded second for several laps before Kinney and Franklin got by them. Rick Green spun for an early yellow flag. ON the restart, Kinney took second from Maples and Chad Compton made an early charge also. Kevin Banks spun for a second yellow flag. Kinney took the lead from Adams and Franklin was right behind him. Scott Clark moved into fifth on lap 10 as the leaders began to race in lapped traffic. Billy Graham Jr fell out without drawing a caution flag. Banks flipped in turn 4 on lap 17 for a red flag. On the restart with 3 laps remaining, Hunting charged by Kinney for the top spot only to fail the post race tech. That handed the win over to Kinney ahead of Franklin, Clark, Griffin, Sam Corso, Jeff Scott, Adams, William Elrod and Rick Neely.

The first heat for the dwarf cars went to Al Ghiorso ahead of Dan Weger and Ted Stinson. Salisbury had a perfect night as he won heat 2 over Neil Stinson and Skip Hempler. Salisbury was chased to his feature win by Bender, Martin, Vuki Wilson, Stuart Goehring, Bill Brown, Jeff Shurley, Mike Atwater, Ghiorso and Hawthorne's Bob Vaden. Billie Canham was the only feature scratch. The 318 Open Wheel class had 8 entries and R Looney beat Kay, Crawford and Wally Looney in the heat race. Larry Creiglow was disqualified from his feature finish as the feature ended up with the same top five order as the heat action. R Looney won ahead of Kay, Crawford, W Looney and Larry Silas.

The BCRA full midgets come to Reno-Fernley on June 12.
