March 20...Ventura, CA -- A
veteran of 20 years racing in multiple classes at Ventura Raceway. Dale Harwood
from Simi Valley got his first Senior Sprint Car feature win Saturday night as
he captured the 20 lap race from a pole start. Fellow front row starter Ron Bach
ran second and took over the early season point lead. Second row starters Jim
Porter and Bruce Douglas ran 3-4 as opening night winner Richard McCormick did
not race.
It was an unusual night for Ventura to have the Senior unwinged 360 sprint cars
in action while the VRA sprints were racing on the big half-mile in Perris this
night. The 20 Senior sprints were split into three heat races. Bach won heat 1
from third starting ahead of front row starters Rick Lewis and Curtis Richards.
Douglas took heat 2 from the pole with Porter second ahead of sixth starter
Wiley Miller. Harwood charged from fifth to win heat 3 over front row starter
Danny Miller and Oren Prosser Sr. The track ran an 8 car, 10 lap B Main but
transferred everyone into the 20 lap A Main. Tim Moon beat Sparky Edmonston and
Bob Hedlund in the B Main. The top four finishers in the 20 lap feature all
started in the front two rows. Harwood won from the pole with outside front row
starter Bach second ahead of Porter and Douglas. The top 12 cars finished on the
lead lap with Lewis fifth ahead of W Miller, Richards, Edmonston and Sammy
Iaconis. Ron Butler, Moon and Steve Gresham were all eliminated in a lap 5
incident. Bach is five points ahead of Douglas and 60 ahead of Harwood after the
first two races on the schedule.
The March 27th race will see the return of the VRA Sprint Cars and they will be
joined by the IMCA Modifieds, VRA Modifieds and Pony Stocks. Tom Stansberry took
over the VRA point lead with his third place finish behind Steve Ostling at
Perris on Saturday night.
