PERRIS, CA -RIS- He never won a 410 sprint car feature event until
two weeks ago but Saturday September 15 2007 David Cardey won his
second feature in three weeks. Added to his third place finish last
week at Ventura the win makes Cardey the hottest driver in the
USAC/CRA series.
Starting from the pole after qualifying eleventh fast, Cardey
lost the lead to third place Michael Spencer but got a second chance
to keep the lead at the start when Blake Miller spun in the second
turn on the first lap. The second time the race was started Miller
held the lead and enlarged it as the race went 21 laps without a
caution. By the 22nd lap Cardey lead second place Spencer by more
than the length of a straight. The first yellow came out when Tony
Jones and Garrett Hansen, who were fighting over third place bumped
and Hansen spun in turn four. Hansen collected Danny Sheridan and
Rip Williams while Jones continued on without damage. Both Sheridan
and Williams were put out by crash damage while Hansen was able to
continue.
When the race was restarted Spencer worked hard to keep contact
with Cardey and almost got past him on lap 25 when Cardey bobbled
badly in turn two. It would have been enough to let Spencer past but
Mike was following too closely and had to go way off line to miss
hitting Cardey. In the end it was a push and both drivers held their
positions. Spencer never got as close as this again and Cardey ended
up the winner by several car lengths.
Tony Jones finished third but there is more that needs to be said
about this. Two weeks ago Tony was chasing after Cardey and Spencer
when he tried to run the bottom on the final lap in turn one. He
bicycled and flipped and in the course of this he broke his collar
bone. Last Friday Jones had surgery to repair the broken bone and
last Saturday he was at home while Cory Kruseman drove his car to
victory at Ventura. A week and a day later Tony was back in 'the
saddle' and he brought in home third. Since he was one place behind
Spencer he will lose a few points but not enough to make a serious
dent in his lead.
Three ten lap heat races were run with the winners being Josh
Ford, Garrett Hansen and Cory Kruseman.
In the first heat the start had to be among the worst that ever
stood as the outside front row starter, Seth Wilson was passed by
four cars before he reached the starting line. Behind him was Rip
Williams who was caught in the traffic and ended up going from
fourth to sixth place. That was where he finished as the track was
very heavy and passing was nearly impossible. Fast qualifier Jimmy
Crawford also got the bad end of this deal and finished seventh. The
third heat had its start called back twice and none of those starts
was as bad as the accepted start in the first heat.
In the second heat Todd Hunsaker went from the outside of the
front row to lead the first lap but then he went too far and
bicycled in the first turn and flipped. He came out ok but it was
the end of the night for him as his crew was not equipped with
enough parts to make repairs.
Rip Williams made the best of his bad finish in the first heat by
winning the B feature which had been cut from 12 to eight laps.
Jimmy Crawford had a disappointing night after starting off by
setting fast time in qualifying with a 17.059 second lap he got
stuck at the back in his heat and had to scratch from the B feature
race. He started at the back of the feature and was the first car
out, finishing last. There were 25 cars in qualifying for the nights
program.
The USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to action next week as
they head to Phoenix, Arizona to run at Manzanita Speedway Saturday.
QUOTES:
CARDEY- “I guess they were right. Once you get the first one
the second ones not as hard.” “This ones definitely for my Mom
and a few others who weren't here (at the track)”.
SPENCER- “Maybe I had a run on him (Cardey) a couple of times
and just trying to get on the bottom underneath down to get into
three and he was running the same line. He did a good job again. I
was following the 83 car here the last couple of weeks. He's done a
great job. His wife Donita must have said something to him to fire
him up lately because he's been really fast lately!”
JONES- “I don't like to make any excuses. The car was good. I
don't know what happened. I was running the bottom. I don't know
what in the heck happened there. I have to go back and watch the
video's and see there I screwed up for the last ten laps.”
