BOSWELL, IN -RIS- If Jerry Coons Jr.
was troubled when Daron Clayton drove his car to a win at Gas City
in round three of Indiana Sprint Week then the sixth round at Kamp
Speedway went a long way towards settling his mind about the
subject. Coons passed Dave Darland on the 13th lap to lead and went
on to win.
"We just haven't had a very good sprint week. Seem to be
qualifying Ok and can't seem to put thirty laps together. This car
was spot on. He kinda checked out. That yellow came out and the air
pressure was pretty low and it got real tight a couple of times so I
just kinda cooled it. It seemed the easier I drove it between three
and four the faster it got. I just started easing up and reeling him
in and reeling him in and I just felt like the bottom line and the
middle it would just stick. This thing was just awesome."
It was the first time for the USAC sprints at Kamp Motor Speedway.
The track is a 3/8 mile oval with big wide turns. It had rained in
the area the night before but not enough to cause the race to be
canceled. The track was a little dusty by the time the main event
was run.
The feature race had Jess Hockett on the pole and Dave Darland on
the outside of the front row. Hockett cut low at the exit of turn
four to get to the line and lead the first lap but Darland took over
from there. There was only one caution in the thirty lap race. It
was caused by Kevin Swindell who spun and stopped in turn two on lap
seven. Darland held the lead until lap 12 when Coons took the lead
for a moment and then lost it back. On lap 13 Coons took over for
good.
Jon Stanbrough had started back in eighth place and was still in
seventh after the caution on lap seven. Jon kept moving up at a
cautious pace and took third from Jess Hockett on lap 20. With a
caution he might have passed Darland or Coons but they were too far
ahead for him to reel them in. Stanbrough's third place finish
increased this points lead on Levi Jones to 25. Jones finished 13th.
J. J. Yeley drove tonight for father, "Cactus Jack" Yeley,
replacing Brad Sweet. J. J. started on the front row of the second
heat but his car broke and he was done for the night.
Neil Shepherd was the fast qualifier and set a new track record with
a 13.149 second lap. Brett Burdette wan the consey race while Brady
Bacon, Ricky Stenhouse, Critter Malone and Jon Stanbrough won the
heat races. Matt Neely won the B feature.
Twenty five cars started the feature, three of which were on
provisionals. The provisional starters were Damion Gardner, Scotty
Weir and Michael Trimble.
Daron Clayton, who won race three in the 69 car was driving the 11D
car instead of his normal 92.
The final two Indiana Sprint Week events are Friday and Saturday at
Bloomington Speedway and Tri-state Speedway. See you at the races!
