GAS CITY, IN-RIS- Round four of the
2007 edition was like the previous three races. There was great
racing and the last nights winner was out of luck in the next race.
This night belonged to night one winner Jon Stanbrough. Stanbrough
started third and took the lead from the races only other leader,
Levi Jones on lap six. Stanbrough is the first repeat winner of
Indiana Sprint Week in 2007.
Twenty four cars were to start the the 30 lap feature but only 23
started as Darren Hagen, who was starting on a provisional, had a
torque tube break as he was warming up for the feature. Darren was
hit by the shaft and had some ankle pain but was walking around
normally by the end of the night.
Finally the race was started and Levi Jones took the lead with Brady
Bacon second and Jon Stanbrough in third. Stanbrough got below Bacon
and it appeared that Brady hit the cushion just a little bit too
hard in an effort to stay in front. He went over the top in turn
four and into the wall on lap four.
Two laps after the restart, on lap 6 Stanbrough made his move and
claimed the lead. Late in the race Jones was able to close, but
never pass Stanbrough. Jon quickly built about a two second lead
while the cars trailing him fought among them selfs. The two Tony
Stewart cars of Jones and Stenhouse plus Dustin Morgan filled the
top four positions and no one
else appeared able to run with them. Jones lost second to Stenhouse
for a time later in the race but got it back near the finish and
Morgan and Stenhouse switched positions more often.
It appeared the race was going to be finished with few interruptions
until lap 22 when Shane Cottle flipped in turn three. Cottle was out
quickly and the race resumed for only two laps when Kevin Swindell
flipped in turn four. Remarkably Swindell was able to continue.
As the laps built towards the finish two more cautions occurred. On
lap 28 of 30 Jerry Coons Jr., driving the 69 car which had won the
night before with Daron Clayton driving, spun in turn two. As the
white flag was being displayed for the final lap the Sprint Week
points leader at the start of the night, Dave Darland, spun in turn
four. That ruined Dave's chances of holding on to the points lead
and set up a green, white, checker finish that allowed Stenhouse to
take third from Morgan one last time. Jess Hockett filled out the
top five.
Like the first three nights events the previous night's winner had a
hard time. This time it was Daron Clayton's turn to be disappointed
as he was forced into the B main and crashed out of that, never
getting to the feature.
The Indiana Sprint Week standings were jumbled by the results and
Levi Jones ended up on top, moving up from second. Jon Stanbrough
moved up to second, trailing Jones by only ten points. Previous
leader Dave Darland fell to third place because of a 17th place
finish and now trails by 31 points. Darren Hagen had come into the
night in third but his last place finish dropped him to sixth and
allowed Brady Bacon to move into fourth place.
Dustin Morgan moved out of the 11 car before the night's qualifying
started and drove the backup 11d car and set fast time for the night
and a new track record for non-winged sprint cars at Gas City with a
12.405 second lap. Forty one cars qualified.
Bacon won the B feature. Michael Trimble, Brandon Petty, Brad Sweet
and Cory Kruseman won the heat races. Cole Whitt won the consy race.
Indiana Sprint Week holds it's fifth race in five days at Kokomo
Speedway Sunday, July 15th.
