LAWRENCEBURG, IN-RIS- The 2007 edition of Indiana
Sprint Week got off to a
flying start at the Lawrenceburg Speedway as Jon Stanbrough
continued his winning ways from last year. Stanbrough is the 2006
Sprint Week champion and won three of five events held including the
last two. For the first act of 2007 Stanbrough set fast time in
qualifying with a 12.369 second lap. After transferring from his
heat with a third place finish the
Jamestown Indiana driver was gridded sixth for the thirty lap
feature.
Brady Bacon took the early lead from the pole and had Daron Clayton
in tow during the early laps. Stanbrough was still in fifth place on
lap four and got some rough treatment from Mat Neely as he tried to
take fourth place from him and the pair bumped exiting turn four.
One lap later Stanbrough had recovered and passed Neely and was
setting his sights on Levi Jones in third place. Jones was passed on
lap six and Clayton fell to Stanbrough on lap nine. Only a lap later
the charging Stanbrough was threatening Bacon when Dustin Morgan,
who had been running mid-field flipped in the third turn stopping
the race.
Morgan got out of the car quickly and under his
own power but showed some signs of leg pain as the safety crew took
him off.
The race was restarted with Bacon in the lead and Stanbrough nipping
at his heals. Jon seemed to be happy using the cushion in turns
three and four and the bottom in one and two. Stanbrough took the
lead on the restart but a spin by Kyle Robbins in the second turn
spoiled the effort with another caution. Bacon got a better restart
the second time but he fell to Stanbrough five laps later on lap 15.
As soon as Stanbrough began to lead lapped traffic became an issue
although he seemed to handle the back markers better than Clayton
who got trapped in traffic in the final laps and fell to the veteran
Dave Darland who came from 12th place to claim second.
That there was trouble with back markers from
mid-race on can be explained by the 26 car starting field which
included four provisional starters in addition to the normal 22
starters. Two of the provisionals were for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and
Damion Gardner who were eligible biased on USAC National Sprint Car
Series points. The other two provisional starters were visitors from
the west coast USAC/CRA series, Scotty Weir and Michael Tremble.
Past Sprint Week champion Cory Kruseman, who was the owner of
Trimble's car was also eligible for a provisional, but yielded the
position to Stenhouse.
Clayton did get one win in the night as he took
the B feature win. Jesse Hockett took the consy. The heat winners
were Darren Hagen, Mat Neely, Neil Sheppard and Chad Boespflug.
The USAC sprint cars and Indiana Sprint Week
return for a second night of action at the Lawrenceburg Speedway
tomorrow (Thursday, July 12) before the move north to Gas City I-69
Speedway for a Friday and Saturday night stand.
