PERRIS, CA-RIS- Tony Jones took home the big
prize for the second year in a row in the “Fire Cracker 40” at
Perris Auto Speedway. Jones took the lead at the half way point by
passing Cory Kruseman who had started on the outside of the front
row and took the lead at the fall of the green.

The race was a drawn out affair with
four cautions and three flips before it was four laps old. Danny
Ebberts flipped on the second lap, Rickie Gaunt flipped on the third
and Rodney Argo flipped on the restart after Gaunt's flip. After
that the race progressed well through lap 15 when a debris caution
was called.
At this point in the race Tony Jones
and Blake Miller were having a serious battle for second place. That
ended when the officials 'black flagged' Miller because his fuel
tank was coming loose. The tank was quickly secured but he was moved
to the rear of the field and was only able to climb back up to
eighth place by the finish. On the restart Scotty Weir, who had been
running fifth got into contact with Josh Ford and Darrin Hagen and
flattened a tire.
When the race was continued Jones
showed that he had a good car for restarts as he got beside Kruseman
and gave him a good fight before returning to second. Further back
Danny Sheridan was making a big fuss and he went from seventh place
to fight with Hagen for fourth. Sheridan appeared to be trying a
little too hard as he let his car get out of
shape in the fourth turn on lap 19 and hit Hagen. Sheridan continued
but Hagen went into the wall and nearly rolled. As the field was
reformed Danny was shown the furled black flag as a warning for
rough driving.
Another restart saw Jones put the
rush on Kruseman. Jones got beside Cory and then took the lead in
the clear on lap 20. He moved out to a comfortable lead within a few
laps.
Caution struck yet again on lap 25
when J. Hicks had a left rear tire disintegrate on the back straight
with enough force to tear the nerf bar off the left side of the car.
Mike Spencer was third for the
restart and went after Kruseman and second place as racing resumed.
He got beside Kruseman but failed to pass. Behind them Rip Williams
was attempting to take the fourth place from Sheridan. Contact
occurred between the two as they swapped the position at least once,
but neither car seemed damaged.
On lap thirty Mike Spencer appeared to be having trouble as his left
rear tire was vibrating badly. He was passed by both Williams and
Sheridan but then seemed to recover and took third back from them on
the same lap. Sheridan's #50 car was not right though and he slowed
and then stopped with a flat tire on the 34^th lap causing another
caution.
As the final laps were run the only
change at the front was David Cardey passing Sheridan to take third.

The preliminaries saw Rickie Gaunt
set fast time at 16.628 seconds and also win the B feature. Seth
Wilson, Mike Spencer, Rip Williams and David Cardey won their heat
races.
The start of the B feature saw one
of the largest pile-ups in recent history when nine of the 14
starters tangled out of turn four and failed to cross the starting
line. Four cars, those of Ross Millar, Billy Blinn, Brent Camarillo
and Royal Adderson flipped. All but two of the
cars were able to restart the race.
