VENTURA, CA - Davey Pombo fought off a late race
charge from Cory Kruseman to win the 30 lap feature in the VRA
sprint car series event of May 19, 2007.
The race was lead at the start by
Rick Hendrix who started second next to pole sitter Kevin Kierce.
Kruseman started fifth but fell back early with ignition trouble. A
three car crash on the second lap eliminated Tony Dighera and Derek
Buckley and sent Chris Wakim to the back. Three laps later Dwayne
Marcum spun to a stop in turn two. Cory Kruseman at the back of the
field at this point and beginning his come back run.
On lap seven Josh Ford moved into second replacing Kierce. A lap
later Kierce broke in turn two and Davey Pombo took over third
place, having moved up from twelfth. On the restart following the
Kierce caution Pombo got the jump on Ford and took over second.
Everything looked to be going Hendrix's way until about the 20th lap
when his car started loosing it's handling. On lap 25 Pombo got the
lead from him and he started his slide back to finish fourth.
Kruseman moved into third place on lap 26 and a caution on lap 27
set the stage for a Kruseman win in the final four laps. Cory took
second from Hendrix on
the restart and pulled along side Pombo on lap 28 with Kruseman
running the cushion while Pombo ran 'huggie pole'. It appeared that
Pombo had seen enough of “the Kruser” because he was able to
pull out enough to get some breathing room at the finish.
Dennis Rodriguez was the winner of the B feature where Chris Wakim
was second. The four heats were won by Josh Ford, Cory Kruseman, Guy
Woodward and 16 year old Johnathon Henry. There were 33 cars for the
event.
