Petaluma’s Wingless Spec Sprint Shootout
by Debbie Shipherd

Wingless Spec Sprints

Petaluma, CA - September 29, 2007.... S & S Automotive’s Darrell Hanestad decisively took the forty lap $2500 win on Saturday September 29 at Petaluma Speedway’s Wingless Spec Sprint Shootout. Hanestad grabbed the lead from Brown’s Valley’s Cody Meyers on lap fifteen and was chased to the checkers by Frank’s Backhoe’s Mason Meyers, Moeller Brothers’ Nick Green, Terry Schank, Jr. in the Matt Fontaine owned sprinter and Chris Magoon in Dave Johnson’s car.

Thirty two Spec Sprint teams rounded up for Petaluma’s open show with a great showcase of talent from several Northern California tracks. At the driver’s meeting promoter Jim Soares discussed plans to run ten or twelve races for this growing class next season. Asking for input from drivers, he announced that the regular purse would be $800 to win and $150 to start.

Qualifying began by pill draw and Hanestad clocked a fast time of 15.133 on the heavy 3/8 mile track. The top four qualifiers ran a quick four lap trophy dash, with Hunt Magneto’s Charlie Marrs finishing first followed by Mason Meyers, Hanestad, and Contra Costa Auto Part’s Keith Shipherd.

Four heat races ran, the top four finishers from each would transfer to the A main and get their qualifying times back. Heat one ran at a fast pace with Nick Green nailing the win followed by Chris Magoon, Hanestad, and Gotelli Speed’s Dave Press. Royal Laundry’s Billy Aton took the heat two win and was followed by Davis’ Steve Stein, Cody Meyers, and KVAL’s Kevin Lewis of Rohnert Park. Concord’s Billy Macedo won the third heat from a front row start and was chased by Sacramento’s Herman Klein, Martinez’s Dave Ellis, and Santa Rosa’s Terry Schank, Jr. Young Kent Stephens of Modesto finished first in heat four with Mason Meyers, Styles Motorsports’ TJ Smith, and Patco Trucking’s Jave Serven rounding out the top four. It was a thrill to watch a stout field of Spec Sprints compete on the tacky, smooth track with non stop, flag to flag action in all of the heat races.

The fifteen lap B main lined up with Allstar Signs and Design’s Rich Crumley and Charlie Marrs on the front row. At the green Marrs piloted into the lead with Crumley, Shipherd and MacKay close behind. A yellow flew for Marcus Hardina before the first lap was done and called for a complete restart. Marrs took the point with Shipherd moving into second by lap three over Crumley, Jimmy Steward and MacKay. A lap five incident ended Styles Motorsports’ Wes Gutierrez’s night. As the laps ticked down the field shrank down to eight sprinters dueling for the top six spots, and at the checkers it was Marrs, MacKay, Shipherd, Olschawka, Newberry and Fisher moving on to the A main.

Herman Klein and Cody Meyers started on the front row of the forty lap feature. Klein darted into the lead at the green and held it for ten laps until he tangled in lapped traffic. Hanestad made the pass on C.Meyers on lap fifteen and Cody Meyers went out with some damage. Hanestad led on the restart and rapidly extended his lead over M.Meyers, Green, Smith, and Schank. A few yellows slowed the fast paced action, on lap twenty a stalled Bob Newberry was hit hard by Fisher and unfortunately ended both their nights. Hanestad deftly continued to thread through lapped traffic with Mason Meyers close behind. At the lap forty checkers it was Hanestad, M.Meyers, Green, Schank, and Magoon in the top five spots.

Special thanks to Jim Soares for sponsoring this well run open show.

Drive safe, have fun and take care.
