Marysville, CA - August 25, 2007.... Steve Stein of Davis took full advantage of his pole starting position and skillfully brought home the Spec Sprint feature win at Marysville Raceway Park on Saturday, August 25. Stein was chased to the checkers by Mark Zieske, Foster City’s Dave Press, Tim Sherman, Jr., and Buddy Olschawka.
On just our second visit to Marysville this season, we were warmly welcomed by new promoters Kathy and Paul Hawes and their friendly staff. They graciously allowed the #20 Shipherd team to take a memorial lap in honor of our crew member Doug Turner, who passed away suddenly on August 14 of a massive heart attack. Our entire team thanks them for the considerate gesture. Another nice touch was the free ice cream given to everyone in the stands and the pits, especially welcome on a hot August afternoon.
A field of nineteen Wingless Spec Sprints made up this evening’s roster. Two of those teams were new drivers to this class, Josh Bates and Marcus Hardina of Santa Rosa. Three heat races ran, with Sacramento’s Pat Russum picking up the first win followed by Gotelli Speed’s Dave Press and Marcus Hardina. Tony Lederer of Hawaii led wire to wire in heat two from a pole start, with Marc Zieske and Steve Stein finishing second and third. Butte Auto Parts’ Mark Hill took the third heat win and was chased to the checkers by Tim Barnes and Josh Tucker of Willows.
The rutty track conditions improved some by the main events, and it was nice to see promoter Paul Hawes making the effort to smooth it out. With an eight invert pulled for the feature, Stein sat on the pole with rookie Marcus Hardina next to him. Stein charged into the lead at the green with Hardina and Russum hot on his tail by lap five. Several yellows slowed the action, the first for Josh Tucker as he lost a wheel. Stein maintained a healthy lead on each restart with a train of cars following, most hugging the inside groove. Yuba City’s Mark Hill dared the outside where conditions were less smooth, but got collected in an incident which unfortunately ended his night early. Hardina appeared to hit the front wall coming out of turn four and then veered back into the lane of traffic, collecting Hill and Jimmy Steward. Both Hill and Steward flipped, severely damaging their mounts, but the drivers were unharmed. On the ensuing restart Stein led, followed by Russum, Zieske, Press, and Sherman, Jr. Russum attempted to challenge for the lead on the high side and then flipped as well. He too was OK. As the remaining laps wound down, Stein continued his dominant run and took the checkers for his second victory at Marysville this season. Zieske, Press, Sherman Jr., and Olschawka rounded out the top five, with hard charger Shipherd patiently posting the sixth spot from a fifteenth start.
Drive safe, have fun and take care.
