(September 16, 2006- Chowchilla, CA)...San Jose's Nick Green
powered his Moeller Brothers' sprinter to his first Spec Sprint
victory at Chowchilla Speedway's 1/3 mile track on Saturday,
September 16. Green overtook Gotelli Speed Shop's Dave Press on lap
twenty two and held it to the checkers with Press and Troy Caraway
of Martinez rounding out the top three finishers.
This was the sixth and final dual club show at Chowchilla with the
Wingless Spec Sprints from the CSRA and NCMA, and the final point
race for the CSRA teams. Rancho Cordova's Jerry Cisco won the 2006
CSRA Championship and Jake Serven and Keith Shipherd finished second
and third in points. Congratulations to all for a fun season of
racing.
A noteable visitor was making the rounds in the pits, the highly
regarded writer Norm Bogan who writes the Hot Laps columns and has
done many awesome interviews and biographies for Flat Out Magazine
and other publications. We all thoroughly enjoyed his company, his
fascinating stories, his kind support and friendship. Another
special guest was
lovely Amber Press, daughter of Dave Press. Amber graced us all with
a beautifully sung National Anthem as Dave took a lap around the
track with our flag.
Two heat races ran on the fast and well prepared track. Napa's David
Goodwill took the first win from a pole start followed closely by
Ramos Oil's Gary Koster and Hale Lumber's Rob Hammond. Dan Simpson
of Rio Vista won heat two and was chased to the checkers by Patco
Trucking's Jake Serven and Rankin Performance Machines' Troy
Caraway. Heat two saw both Brentwood's Jimmy Lavell and Keith
Shipherd pit early with unfortunate mechanical problems. David
Goodwill won the four lap trophy dash.
Prior to the feature events, promoters Tom and Cindy Sagmiller
graciously scheduled memorial laps for some very special people. One
lap was taken by Keith Shipherd in memory of Pete Ogden, a
fabricator, racer, and beloved crew member of the Shipherd team who
recently passed away. We are grateful to Dave Munoz who read Pete's
memorial and to the many racing friends for their support and kind
words. Jerry Cisco took a lap for nephew Staff Sargeant Jason March,
who was seriously wounded in Iraq and is now hospitalized. We all
offer our prayers for a complete recovery.
The twenty five lap feature began with Foster City's "Dynamite
Dave" Press and Stockton's Bobby Nichols grid on the front row.
Troy Caraway and Rob Hammond sat in row two, and Nick Green was back
in the tenth spot. Press took the lead at the green with a spin or
two bringing the field back for several restarts. On lap two
Shipherd's right rear tire blew, retiring him to the pits. By lap
three a fast paced race was underway on the tacky track with Press
at the point followed closely by Caraway, Hammond, and Koster. Green
throttled into the third spot on lap six and began battling with
Caraway for second. The two sliced and diced cleanly for many
thrilling laps as Press continued his smooth run at the front. Green
darted under Press and swept into the lead on lap twenty two, and as
the checkered flag flew, it was Nick Green, Dave Press, and Troy
Caraway in the top three spots.
A huge thanks to Tom and Cindy Sagmiller and their crew for the
terrific track, great hospitality, and a fun racing season.
Chowchilla's next race for the Wingless Spec Sprints will be on
Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 for the 6th Annual Open
Wheel Round Up. Drive safe, have fun and take care.
