(June 3, 2006- Marysville, CA)...Tony Richards powered the
Hunt Magnetos’ #76 owned by Oroville’s Doug Butterfield to his
first 2006 feature win at Twin Cities Speedway on Saturday June 3.
Richards overtook pole sitter Charlie Marrs on the seventh lap with
a smooth pass as veteran racers Phil Pedlar and Jerry Kobza diced
back and forth for the runner up spot. Pedlar finished second, Kobza
third, and Art Enterprises’ Rick Eversult and RJB Engines’ Jerry
Cisco rounded out the top five.
A field of nineteen Wingless Spec Sprints raced for the 7th
annual Mel Hall Memorial on Twin Cities’ quarter mile track.
Mel’s son Mark Hall drove his winged sprinter for a memorial lap
as fans and teams paid tribute to the well respected former track
promoter. Mel Hall was also a former Central State Racing
Association president in the club’s early years when they raced at
Grass
Valley
and
Auburn
.
The Spec Sprints had three heat races, with Elk Grove’s Shannon
Newton taking the first win in his RJB Engines’ sprinter.
Newton
took the lead from Rio Linda’s Rick Eversult with a nice inside
pass as
West Sacramento
’s Phil Pedlar followed into the second spot, and Eversult
finished a strong third.
Rancho Cordova
’s Jerry Cisco led much of heat two with Red Line Oil’s Jerry
Kobza camping on his tail. Cisco’s slight bobble on lap six was
all Kobza needed for the pass to the front as Tony Richards charged
into second followed closely by Cisco. Contra Costa Auto Parts’
Keith Shipherd won heat three, waging a good battle for the lead
with Hughes Body & Fenders’ Jay Youngman. Charlie Marrs
finished in the second spot and Jimmy Steward was third.
The twenty lap feature saw Hunt Magneto’s Marrs and Richards grid
on the front row. Marrs darted into the lead at the green with
Richards, Pedlar, Shipherd, and
Newton
hard on the throttle behind him. An early spin on the slick track
collected
Newton
and Shipherd which ended
Newton
’s night and put Shipherd several laps down after repairs. Marrs
continued to lead until Richards made a smooth pass in turn four to
take the point. Pedlar and Kobza dueled hard for the second spot,
Pedlar powered into second on lap nine with Kobza hot on his tail
and Kobza took the second spot several laps later. Pedlar charged
back into second as the white flag flew, and at the checkers it was
Richards, Pedlar, Kobza and Cisco in the top five.
Special thanks to TCS official Tim Sherman for diligently reporting
the final official results to us in such a timely manner. The CSRA
Wingless Sprints will return to Marysville on Saturday June 17 and
will race at Chowchilla Speedway’s well prepared one third mile
track on Saturday June 24. Drive safe, have fun and take care.
