(May 6, 2006- Chowchilla, CA)...Darrell Hanestad of Clayton
powered his S & S Automotive Sprinter to his first victory of
the ’06 season at Twin Cities Speedway on Saturday May 6 from a
second row start. Hanestad made the move on front row starter Gary
Lewis of Cameron Park on lap three and never looked back.
The CSRA Wingless Sprints joined with the Twin Cities Speedway
Sprints for a 22 car field. Also on the program lineup for the
evening were the visiting BCRA Midget Lites and always entertaining
Vintage Midgets. The Wingless Sprints ran three fast and clean heat
races. Front row starter Have Air Will Travel’s Billy Macedo took
the win in the first heat which ran flag to flag. He was chased to
the checkers by Hanestad and Golden Bear Alarm’s Ryan McDaniel. H
& H Trucking’s Jeremy Hawes won heat two, followed by
Oroville’s Doug Butterfield and James Postell of
Madison
. Rio Linda’s Rick Eversult took home the win
in heat three with Gary Lewis and Contra Costa Auto Parts’ Keith
Shipherd rounding out the top three. Elk Grove’s Shannon Newton
struggled with a broken fuel pump drive and was unable to race.
The 20 lap feature was lined up with a 6th invert pulled
by Macedo, which placed Lewis and Butterfield on the front row with
Hanestad and Eversult in row two. After two bad starts the race went
green and Lewis took the point when an unfortunate tangle saw both
Hawes and Eversult flipping. Under the red both drivers were
attended to by the ambulance staff and Hawes was transported to the
hospital. Eversult was alright but his car severely damaged. On
Sunday it was reported that Hawes had been released but was bruised
and sore. Lewis took the lead on the restart and Hanestad made the
pass a lap or two later. At lap 8 the leaders were Hanestad, Lewis,
Macedo, Steve Stein, and McDaniel. Macedo soon moved into the second
spot followed by Kevin Sprague, Jake Serven, and Tim Sherman, Jr.
Many yellow flags slowed the racing action considerably, mostly for
cars spinning out on the challenging track surface. The last segment
of the race gained some momentum with a half dozen laps strung
together, and at the checkers it was Hanestad, Macedo, Serven,
Williams and Cisco in the top five.
Kudos to some good people at TCS who have stepped up to the plate to
help the new promoter make some much needed improvements. Veteran
racer Tim Sherman who is now a TCS official ran the Spec Sprint
drivers meeting and patiently answered many questions. His direction
sped up the program and the first feature started before
9 PM
. He also went the extra mile and called to inform me of Hawes’
condition and report the official results on Sunday. Special thanks
also to track announcer Ron Albright who took the time to sit and
visit with the innovative fabricator Pete Ogden.
The CSRA Wingless Sprints will race again on Saturday May 20 at Twin
Cities Speedway in Marysville. Drive safe, have fun and take care.
