Chowchilla, CA Aug.27...Jerry Kobza of Folsom took the 25 lap
Wingless Sprint feature win at Chowchilla Speedway's 1/3 mile track
on Saturday August 27. This was Kobza's second victory at Chowchilla
and his fourth feature win of the 2005 season. Kobza started his Red
Line Oil Sprinter on the second row and overtook front row starter
David Goodwill of Napa on lap 20. Hale Lumber's Rob Hammond, Steve
Pemberton from Salinas, Goodwill and Ramos Oil's Gary Koster rounded
out the top five.
A field of 25 Wingless Sprints from the CSRA and NCMA clubs
entertained the Chowchilla fans with exciting open wheeled racing
for the 5th of 6 scheduled races there this season. Several
newcomers added to the car count to support this fast growing class,
among them Tri Valley Machine's Anthony Ryan of Oakley, Doug Gandy,
Jr., Steve Pemberton, John McCann of Tracy, and Richard Harvey, Jr.,
who regularly races in the
SCRA 360 injected class.
The four heat races ran quickly, and the top four finishers of each
heat transferred to the A main. Sheldon's Billy Garcia won heat 1,
and was chased by Jerry Kobza, Doug Brewer, and Richard Harvey, Jr.
Heat two ran flag to flag with Woodland's Kenny Bair taking the win
followed by Sacramento's Phil Pedlar, Steve Nelson form Jackson, and
Contra Costa
Auto Parts' Keith Shipherd. The heat three win went to Morgan Hill's
Rob Hammond with David Goodwill, Ed Amador, and Randy Jones'
Construction's Jimmy Lavell in the top four. Veteran driver Gary
Koster won the fourth heat and was tailed by Michael Zarevich,
Patrick Russum of Citrus Heights, and Concord's Bert Siverling. The
"Woodland Express", Gary Koster was the trophy dash
victor.
Sierra Tow's Sam Fries led the first ten circuits of the long,
caution filled twelve lap B Main, where several new drivers were
challenged by the slick surface and spun. After a lap ten restart
for a spun car, Steve Pemberton made an outside pass to take the
lead and the win. Pemberton, Fries, Chico's Don Emery, and Larry
Nelson finished in the top four transfer spots.
Twenty Wingless Sprints lined up for the feature event with Goodwill
on the outside front row and Zarevich on the pole. Goodwill darted
into the lead at the green with Pedlar, Kobza, and Koster soon in
hot pursuit. A single caution slowed the early action, and after the
restart the field was a tight pack of Sprints running nearly nose to
tail. Passing was at
a premium on the slick surface, but at lap twenty Kobza caught up
with Goodwill and made a smooth pass in turn 3 for the lead. Hammond
and Pemberton slipped by as well, and as the checkered flew, it was
Kobza, Hammond, Pemberton, Goodwill, and Koster in the top 5.
The SCRA injected 360 Sprints also featured for the evening had a
field of nine cars racing, and generously invited the top 6
finishing Wingless Sprints to tag their main event. Young Steven
Williams of Merced took the win with Danny Olmstead on his tail in
an exciting race that saw several carbureted sprints pass injected
sprints. CSRA's Jerry Kobza finished a solid 5th and Woodland's Gary
Koster ran strong and did some
passing as well.
In addition to a great night of racing, Chowchilla fans were treated
to a demonstration and display of the new Tobias
"Slingshot" which was recently purchased by local racer
Ken Bonemma. Nick Sagmiller took a spin in the car and had a blast,
as did fans checking it out after the races in the pits.
The Wingless Sprints return to Chowchilla Speedway on Saturday
September 24, and thank the Chowchilla promoters and team for their
hospitality. The next CSRA Wingless Sprint race will be at
Sacramento Raceway on Friday September 9. Drive safe, have fun, and
take care.
